Cozumel Island at a Glance

Cozumel is roughly 30 miles long and 10 miles wide. The developed west coast faces the mainland, while the rugged east coast faces the open Caribbean. One paved road circles the entire island.

Three Piers, Three Experiences

Which pier your ship docks at changes your entire port day. Punta Langosta puts you in downtown; the other two are a short taxi ride away. Check with your cruise line before arrival.

Punta Langosta

Disney, Norwegian, MSC, Celebrity, Oceania, Silversea, Regent, Crystal, Marella

🚶

5-minute walk to San Miguel’s main square (Benito Juarez Park), shops, and restaurants. You’ll cross an overpass into the Punta Langosta shopping mall and exit directly onto the Malecón waterfront.

🚕

Taxi to beach clubs: $8–$17 USD depending on destination. Taxi stand is right outside the terminal exit.

💡

The ferry to Playa del Carmen departs from the pier next door — you can walk there in under 5 minutes if you want to visit the mainland.

International Pier (SSA)

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Holland America, Princess, Norwegian (select ships)

🚶

~30 min walk or $8 taxi to downtown San Miguel. A 10-minute walk south gets you to Puerta Maya’s shops and restaurants.

🚕

Closer to southern beach clubs — Chankanaab is a quick $12 ride. Taxi stand at terminal exit with posted rate board.

💡

This is the oldest pier and services cargo too. Exit the terminal, look for the rate board, and agree on the fare before getting in.

Puerta Maya

Carnival, Holland America, Princess, AIDA, Costa, P&O, Seabourn, Cunard

🚶

Not walkable to town, but the terminal itself has shops, restaurants (Three Amigos, Hard Rock Cafe), bars, and a Diamonds International.

🚕

$8 taxi to downtown. On busy 7–8 ship days, lines at the taxi stand can be long — be patient or walk to International Pier (10 min) for shorter waits.

💡

The newest and most polished terminal. Built by Carnival Corporation. Expect a “duty-free maze” of shops before you reach the taxi stand outside.

Beach Clubs Along the West Coast

All beach clubs line the calm western shore, south of downtown. Most offer lounge chairs, food, drinks, restrooms, and water activities. Taxi rides from cruise piers range from $8 to $25 depending on distance.

Note

Paradise Beach, Carlos & Charlie’s, and Chulas are located directly next to Jet Ski Cozumel, making it easy to combine a beach day with jet ski rentals, parasailing, or a snorkel tour without an extra taxi.

💡 Money-saving tip: Walk outside the pier terminal area and flag a taxi on the main road to avoid the “cruise port premium.” Taxi rates are regulated by a union (Sindicato de Choferes Taxistas) and drivers must carry an official rate card — ask to see it. Fares listed above are for up to 4 passengers. Groups of 5 pay ~45% more; 6–8 passengers (in a van) pay double.

What's Where on Cozumel

The west coast is calm and developed; the east coast is wild and windswept. Understanding the island’s zones helps you decide how to spend your port day.

🏙

Downtown San Miguel

Cozumel's only real town. Grid-layout streets make it easy to explore on foot. The waterfront Malecón is lined with shops and restaurants. Avenida Benito Juarez runs east-west and divides the town into "Norte" and "Sur."

🏖

West Coast (Leeward)

Calm, warm water sheltered from Caribbean winds. This is where all the beach clubs, cruise piers, dive shops, and resort hotels are. The coastal road (Carretera Costera Sur) connects everything from downtown to Punta Sur.

🌊

East Coast (Windward)

Rugged, undeveloped, and dramatic. The surf can be strong — swimming is risky at most spots. But the scenery is stunning and the beach bars (Coconuts, Mezcalitos, Chen Rio) serve cheap drinks with incredible views.

🐢

Southern Tip (Punta Sur)

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park covers the island's southern tip with pristine beaches, a lighthouse, crocodile lagoon, and a small Mayan ruin. It's the most remote and least crowded part of the island. Entry ~$18.

North Coast & Hotel Zone

Quieter resort area north of town with a country club, Playa Azul beach, and some of the island's upscale hotels. Less visited by cruise passengers but great for those staying on-island.

🤿

Underwater Reef System

Cozumel's west-coast reefs are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest in the world. Visibility often exceeds 100 feet. Drift diving here is world-class, and many snorkel spots are accessible from shore.

⏱ Port Day Planner

Sample Port Day: 8 Hours in Cozumel

A realistic itinerary that balances beach time, downtown exploration, and shopping — with plenty of buffer to get back to your ship on time.

🚢
8:00 AM
Ship Docks — Be Among the First Off
Most ships dock between 7–9 AM. Get off early to beat the rush for taxis. If at Punta Langosta, walk straight into downtown.
🚕
8:30 AM
Grab a Taxi to Your Beach Club
Head to your pre-chosen beach club while it’s still uncrowded. Mr. Sanchos, Paradise Beach, or Nachi Cocom are all great choices. Arrive before the crowds from all the ships.
🏖
9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Beach Club Time
Snorkel, swim, eat lunch, grab drinks. Most all-inclusive passes cover everything. If you’re at Paradise Beach or nearby clubs, Jet Ski Cozumel is a 50-foot walk through the sand — add parasailing or a jet ski session to your beach day without needing another taxi. Don’t forget reef-safe sunscreen — it’s required in Cozumel’s marine parks.
🌮
1:30 PM
Taxi to Downtown San Miguel
Explore the town. Walk the Malecón, browse the Mercado Municipal, grab tacos at a local spot. Try cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork) — a Yucatecan specialty.
🛍
2:30 PM
Shopping & Souvenirs
For authentic goods, skip the port shops and walk to Avenida 15 or 20 for local markets. Hammocks from Merida, vanilla, chocolate, and handmade crafts are the best buys.
🍹
3:30 PM
Last Drink on the Waterfront
Find a spot along the Malecón for a final margarita or michelada. Watch the sunset-lit water before heading back.
🚢
4:00 PM
Back to the Ship
All-aboard is usually 4:30–5:30 PM. Give yourself at least 30 minutes of buffer. If at Punta Langosta, it’s a 5-minute walk. From other piers, grab a taxi.

The itinerary above works for most port days — but your experience depends on which pier your ship docks at, how many other ships are in port, and whether the port is even open. Want a plan built around your exact ship?

Cozumel's Famous Reef System

The island’s west coast is lined with world-class reefs that are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest reef system on Earth. Visibility regularly exceeds 100 feet.

At Jet Ski Cozumel we offer one of the absolute best guided snorkel tours to El Cielo, Palancar Reef, and two additional reefs — with food, drinks, and gear included starting at $65

Dzul Ha Reef

Accessible from shore at the Money Bar / Buccanos area. Shallow, calm water perfect for first-time snorkelers. Colorful fish, sea fans, and brain coral.

El Cielo

A shallow sandbar famous for hundreds of starfish in crystal-clear water. Boat excursion required. One of the most photographed spots in Cozumel — arrive early.

Palancar Reef

A massive multi-section reef with towering coral formations, swim-throughs, and abundant marine life. Both snorkel and dive trips available. Iconic Cozumel reef.

Columbia Reef

Deep pinnacles and dramatic coral heads rising from the seafloor. Known for eagle rays, turtles, and nurse sharks. Primarily a dive site (80–100+ ft).

Santa Rosa Wall

A famous wall dive starting at ~50 ft and dropping into the abyss. Massive sponges, overhangs, and tunnels. Strong drift currents — experienced divers only.

Playa Corona (Shore)

Walk-in snorkeling from the Playa Corona beach club. Good reef just offshore with sergeant majors, parrotfish, and occasional sea turtles. Very accessible.

What Every Visitor Should Know

01

Know Your Pier Before You Go

Your entire port day strategy changes based on whether you dock at Punta Langosta (downtown), International Pier, or Puerta Maya (both south of town). Check with your cruise line.

02

Pay in Pesos, Save 10–15%

USD is accepted everywhere, but the exchange rate applied by taxis and shops is usually worse than the bank rate. Get pesos from an ATM downtown (avoid airport ATMs) for better prices.

03

Cash is King

Many taxis, small restaurants, and beach vendors only accept cash. Credit cards are hit-or-miss outside major tourist spots. Bring US cash or pesos in small denominations.

04

Reef-Safe Sunscreen Required

Oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreens are banned in Cozumel's marine parks and beach clubs. Many places will confiscate non-reef-safe sunscreen. Buy mineral sunscreen before your trip.

05

Don't Drink the Tap Water

Drink bottled water only. Most restaurants use purified water for cooking and ice, but confirm with your server. Brush teeth with bottled water to be safe.

06

One Road Circles the Island

You literally cannot get lost on Cozumel. A single paved road circles the island. Renting a scooter or Jeep is an easy DIY option for $30–$60/day, but watch for potholes on the east side.

Common Cozumel Questions

Cozumel sits about 11 miles off the coast of Playa del Carmen on the Yucatan Peninsula. The passenger ferry takes approximately 30 minutes and runs multiple times daily. The ferry dock is adjacent to the Punta Langosta cruise pier in downtown San Miguel.

Cozumel is widely considered one of the safest cruise destinations in the Caribbean. The island economy depends almost entirely on tourism, so safety is a top priority. Standard precautions apply — keep valuables secure, stay in tourist areas, and use official taxis — but violent crime targeting tourists is extremely rare.

It depends on your pier. From Punta Langosta, you can walk to small beach areas near downtown in 10–15 minutes. From International Pier or Puerta Maya, the nearest beach clubs are a $8–$12 taxi ride. There are no swimmable beaches directly at the cruise terminals.

Cozumel can accommodate up to 8 cruise ships simultaneously across its three terminals. On busy days, this can mean 20,000+ cruise passengers on the island at once. For a quieter experience, aim for activities in the early morning or choose less popular destinations like the east coast or Punta Sur.

It depends on what you want. For all-inclusive with a lively atmosphere, Mr. Sanchos is the crowd favorite. For families with kids, Playa Mia or Paradise Beach offer water parks and activities. For a quiet, exclusive day, Nachi Cocom limits attendance to 130 guests. For budget snorkeling, the Money Bar offers free entry right on the reef.

Yes, but it’s a long day. Both require a ferry to the mainland plus significant driving time. Tulum is more doable (ferry + ~1 hour drive). Chichen Itza is roughly 8 hours round-trip from Cozumel with only about 45 minutes at the site — most travelers recommend saving it for a mainland visit. You can also visit Xcaret, Xel-Ha, or Xplor parks on the mainland via organized excursions.

San Miguel is laid out on a simple grid. Streets running north-south are called “Calles” (even numbers north, odd south of Benito Juarez). Streets running east-west are “Avenidas” numbered in multiples of 5. Avenida Benito Juarez divides the city into Norte and Sur sections and is the main road to the east side of the island.
