Is it hard to get a taxi in cozumel?
No, getting a taxi in cozumel is very easy. The local taxis have a red strip down the side and remind me of fire ants because you literally see them everywhere. Beach clubs and all inclusive resorts always have cabs on standby.

About 6 blocks from downtown
For Airbnb or Villa customers the doorman will call you a taxi. My Recommendation is to download Whatsapp, get the drivers number and message them directly for better service. It’s totally normal because they all are independent contractors.
Cozumel Motocabs
You may see these small red 2-person taxis in Cozumel but they are not for tourists. These Motocabs are a small local fleet servicing the locals. They have no government permissions or licensing yet.

What’s the best way to get around in cozumel?
The best way to get around Cozumel is by taxi or rental car. Taxis are highly reliable and offer fixed rates between downtown and major beach clubs like Playa San Francisco.
For those wanting to explore the “Wild Side” or circle the island, a rental Jeep or compact car is the safest and most flexible choice. While moped rentals are available, they are not recommended for novice drivers due to high traffic and sand on the roads.

How much is a taxi in Cozumel?
Taxi prices in cozumel are based on the number of people and generally range from $10-$40 but prices fluctuate based on your location. For quick trips within town for 1-2 people you can expect to pay $10–$20 USD, while a taxi to a beach clubs (further from downtown) typically range from $20 to over $40 USD. Taxi prices are split into two pricing brackets.
For travelers with larger groups of people (over 8) you will have to take multiple taxis. Don’t try to squeeze multiple people into a taxi. But there are other cheat codes to saving money on tax rides on Cozumel.
Example: If you have 9 people but all of you can fit into a single van you will still be charged for 2 taxis.
Cozumel Taxi Prices
(Taxi Fares as of 2026 and subject to change)
- Airport to Downtown: Around $39-$47 USD (day/night).
- Downtown to Cruise Ports (e.g., Puerta Maya): Around 110 MXN (approx. $6-$7 USD).
- Popular Beach Clubs (e.g., Paradise Beach, Mr. Sancho’s): $15-$35 USD
- To Southern Attractions (Punta Sur): $35-$70+ USD.
Example: Let’s say your cruise ship docked at Punta Langosta. You booked a beach day at Paradise Beach Club and planned to walk over for a cozumel parasailing tour with us. A one way taxi ride for two people would cost you $16.
Now airport shuttles are the most expensive, often falling between $40 and $60 USD. Always confirm the final price in either pesos or USD with your driver before getting in the vehicle to avoid surprises, keeping in mind that night rates are higher.
Pro Tip: Rates are fixed, but can be negotiable!
Cozumel Taxi Rates(zones)
The good news is taxi prices in Cozumel mexico are fixed. There are no meters. None. Taxi ride prices are determined by zones, but drivers often “forget” this when they see a cruise ship lanyard.
The zone maps are confusing and you don’t need to know them, the photo is just to help you understand how the pricing is determined. Actual prices for taxis in cozumel are below.
But first remember, never and I mean never, get into the car without agreeing on the price first. Below is the honest pricing guide.
Pro Tip: Paying in pesos is always cheaper than USD!
Hacks for Cozumel Taxis:
Here are my best tips for catching a taxi in cozumel the best tip is first.
Share a ride Split the cost
You can save 50% of the taxi cost by sharing a ride with someone. Prices are for 1-4 people, so two couples going to the same place and the taxi costs $20 per couple that’s $40. But if you make friendly with strangers while standing in line and act like “old” friends meeting up on vacation they can only change you for a group rate instead of two separate groups!
Confirm The Price
There are dozens of stories of people being overcharged. Always verify price BEFORE getting in. Don’t be ashamed to take a photo of the pricing chart.
Do Cozumel Taxis Take USD?
Yes, cab drivers in cozumel will happily accept US Dollars for payment. But the wise tourists pay in pesos for the best price. Taxi drivers don’t have change so be prepared and keep smaller bills handy because the savings can add up quickly!
- Walk Away: Price too high? walk a few blocks away from the main port taxi stand
- Check Posted Rates: Fixed rates are often posted at taxi stands, especially at the cruise ports.
- Airport vs. Port: Taxis at the airport have fixed zone rates, while those at cruise ports might be more negotiable.
- Uber/Lyft: Not widely available or permitted for airport pickups

Taxis in Cozumel From Port
Getting a taxi from any cruise port in cozumel is super easy but chaotic. For example at Puerta Maya or the International Terminal, you have to walk through the “duty-free maze” to get to the taxi stand (shown below). The dispatchers there will shout prices at you in addition to all the street sellers trying to get your money.

Punta Langosta Port as a ship arrives
This can be very overwhelming, and a big reason why I recommended you book our tours in advance with a small deposit to avoid the stress and secure your time slot. If your ship doesn’t dock or the weather goes bad you get all of your deposit back.
Peace of mind that comes from knowing your entire day is planned is unmatched. You’ll have so much to process in a new country but finding a exciting Cozumel excursion with someone you can trust won’t be a worry.

Local taxi drivers keep track of cruise schedules and know exactly when ships are arriving. This ensures tourists always have reliable ways to get around to enjoy the island.

Just outside the cruise terminal
As you can see above, taxis are ALWAYS lined up outside major ports. Its the same at the cozumel ferry if your on a day trip to cozumel from playa del Carmen and beach clubs. They operate on a first come first serve basis.
Taxi rates are different depending on where you, so before you can find the prices of taxis organized by location. Just click the photo to enlarge.

Private Taxi tours
A Cozumel Taxi Tour aka “private tour” is something a lot of people don’t know about. You can actually hire a regular taxi driver by the hour to be your private chauffeur for the day. These are a great way to pack a lot of experiences in a single day even if your on a cruise ship. Beach, food, tasting, mayana ruin, and watersports activity all for a flat price. At Jet Ski Cozumel we offer two types of Private Tours

The two private tour options we offer
We call this the “Island Loop.” You grab a driver at the pier or your hotel and say, “How much for 4 hours?” A standard private tour is usually for 1-4 people and runs $40 – $50 USD per hour. If you have a larger group and need a van (5-8 people), expect $70 – $90 USD per hour.
Taxi Tours In Cozumel Benefits

Catching a taxi at cozumel airport
The Cozumel International Airport (CZM) is a federal zone. This means regular red/white city taxis cannot pick you up curbside. Instead you will see different kinds of shuttles and there are a lot!
After your out of the airport property you will only be able to hail taxis with the red strip like everyone else noore shuttles u less your staying at a resort. When I stayed at Secrets Azul the front desk had shuttles to take US back to the airport ready.
The Airport “Hack” No One Tells You About
The Expensive Way:
Buy a ticket for the “Flex Shuttle” (collective van) inside the airport. It’s about $10-$15 per person, but you have to wait for the van to fill up, and it stops at every hotel along the way.
The Local Hack: Walk out of the airport terminal, turn left, and walk about 200 yards to the main road (Boulevard Aeropuerto). Cross the street to Diego’s Tacos. Regular city taxis hang out there. You’ll pay half the price and leave immediately.
Cozumel Taxi FAQ’s

Taxis in Cozumel do not take credit cards. Almost never. Most taxis are cash only. If you try to pay with a card, they will laugh or drive you to an ATM. Bring Pesos or small USD bills ($1s, $5s, $10s). Drivers “never” have change for a $20 or $50.
How much to tip taxi drivers in Cozumel?
It’s not mandatory, but if they help with bags or give you good recommendations, 10-15% (or 20-50 Pesos) is standard.
Is it easy to get a taxi at the cruise ports?
Yes, but it’s chaotic. At Puerta Maya or the International Pier, you have to walk through the “duty-free maze” to get to the taxi stand. The dispatchers there will shout prices at you. Check the board listing the official rates before you agree.
