With so many things to do you might think any tour is a good choice but if you think like that you’ll be disappointed just like I was. These tours are cookie cutter excursions made to fit as many people as possible without specializing in any particular groups of travelers.

 

This blog will save you disappointment and time reading Google reviews trying to decide. Here’s your first tip. The Pirate Ship tour is NOT ideal for kids. Surprised? Yea, so was I.

The number one thing to do in Cozumel is snorkeling and scuba diving. But there are still plenty of others things to do in Cozumel. Cozumel is famous for the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, with underwater visibility reaching up to 100 feet (30 meters). Visitors flock to the island for world-class water activities, specifically exploring the protected coral reefs of Palancar and the famous starfish at El Cielo.

Besides the water you can make unforgettable memories trying lots of other stuff. When I first started researching everyone talked about how clear the water was so I had to see that first.

But during me 5 day vacation at Secrets resort I got tired of just sitting on the beach. I wanted to explore. Fast forward to now I have revisited over a dozen times and tried almost everything.

 

 

Things to do in Cozumel cruise port

For tourists who decide you want to stay within the cruise port area for budget or safety reasons or you just don’t want to venture far these are for you. Below you will find the limited but still fun options for stuff to do in any of cozumels cruise port areas.

 

Visit Senor Frogs

I recommend checking out senor Frogs for food and entertainment within the cruise port area. It’s only a 4 minute walk outside the terminal and downstairs. It’s not the authentic food I highly recommend but it’s a fun place to try without venturing far. You can find this at the Punta Langosta cruise port.

Swim at the ports beach club

Within the cruise port they have a small beach area and restaurant that tourists have rated well. It’s called Tequila Go GO. Here you can swim and snorkel. It’s nothing compared to the most popular Cozumel beach clubs on the island but it’s a nice amenity for tourists wanting to stay close to the ship.

 

 

 

 

Walk around downtown

I highly recommend doing this for everyone. Make sure to read what all tourists should avoid in Cozumel first. Just about a 12 minute walk from Punta Langosta is downtown Cozumel. Here you can feel the island vibes. Cozumel centro and Parquet Bonito Juarez are the middle of downtown. Grab some gelato, shop or just sight see it’s all totally worth it.

 

Downtown Cozumel is safe for tourists so don’t worry about that. Exploring and shopping are pretty much all you can do, but just walking along the ocean front road is a cool experience.

Things To Do In Cozumel For Families

Traveling with the whole crew or a big family group of 6+ people can be costly and difficult to plan. Especially when you’re mixing grandparents, parents, and little ones you need activities that work for everyone together. Nobody wants to split up on a port day. I have solutions!

The good news is Cozumel is one of the best cruise ports for exactly this. There are a few top things I recommend for large groups, some of these may look familiar but with such a large group your options started to get limited. Here’s what actually works for groups of 6 or more with mixed ages when it comes to things to do in Cozumel for families:

 

Paradise Beach Club Day

Cost: $65 Per Person  |  Length: All day

Best for: ❌ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

This is the move for large mixed-age groups. Everyone in the same place. Chairs, water, food, drinks and beach allow everyone to break off to do their own thing while still have lots of options like shore snorkeling, paddle boarding, jet skiing and parasailing.

The  kids can swim, grandparents relax in the shade (always watching) while parents grab a drink at the bar. There is a massive pool if the ocean water isn’t your thing. If you want more excitement try a quick 30 min activity like jet skiing. But there is a very important reason I suggest this first.

Beach clubs are super popular and have a large variety of people, meaning everyone can have someone to talk to without feeling out of place. Kids have others kiddos their age to keep them busy building sand castles. Teenagers can climb on the water obstacle courses or hop on the back of a jet ski with mom or dad.

 

Best part? If you book a activity that usually covers the beach club entry cost of 2 people which is around $65. Nobody is locked into a schedule and nobody gets left out. Which leads me to my second recommendation for families visiting Cozumel.

San Gervasio Mayan Ruins

Cost: $6 person   | Length: ANY

Mayan ruins are all over mexico and a big tourist attraction. It’s a great activity for the whole crew and even when it rains. Not the greatest for kids under 6 because they won’t have much to entertain them. However, it’s a very cost effective way to spend a few hours even though they have a souvenir shop that can add up the total quickly.

You’ll feel the powerful energy of the ancient world as you walk these paths, giving you a deep sense of connection to the island’s history that makes your vacation feel truly meaningful. There are tons to explore. Expect lots of walking and often large groups from cruise ships on buses.

 

 

El Cielo Snorkel Tour Top Choice

Cost: $75 Person  |  Length: 1.5 hrs

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

Waist-deep water, starfish, and manta rays. This one works specifically because it’s accessible — you don’t need to be a strong swimmer and there’s no deep water involved. Grandparents who wouldn’t normally snorkel can do this one comfortably. Kids go absolutely crazy for the starfish. It’s the one tour where every age group comes back talking about the same moment.

Great for all ages as your case are above. See 3 reefs 15-30 feet deep b fore setting off to El Cielo where things calm down and get incredibly clear where I recommend everyone take the opportunity to grab a photo how clear the water is. Tour guides will prepare fresh fruits, pico and drinks for everyone.

 

 

Kaokao Chocolate Factory

Cost: $51 Person  |  Length: 1.5 hrs

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

This is great for families because they can handle  up to 12 people in a tour keeping everyone together and giving them something to do. Satisfy the kids sweet tooth and learn something cool with a fun, hands-on workshop to learn about Maya chocolate production.

It’s a 5 part experience starting with history, tour of the facility to watch them make it before you make your own. With start times from 9am and th last one being at 1 pm you have flexible timing to plan around it.

In my honest opinion, the price is the only kicker. $51 is pricy when you get above 4 people  when there is still a entire 1/2 day to fill with things to do. Either way it’s a great option for families looking for things to do that keep everyone together.

Things to do in cozumel on a cruise

Cozumels tourism is made of 90% cruise ship passengers. This means if you’re coming on a cruise ship you will have a ton of things to choose from without booking excursions directly through your cruise ship.

I suggest booking in advance. The dolphin discovery is inside chankanaab amusement park. Everyone gets to swim with dolphins and you can pay additional for a photo which they are taking without you knowing. You have the option to stay all day if you want but the dolphins experience will take approx two hours.

 

 

Otoch (Authentic) Mayan Experience

Cost: $29 person   | Length: 2.5 hrs

A chance to meet real Maya hosts during the most immersive experience on the island. Join a ceremonial welcome, try hands-on crafts and cooking, share a homemade meal, and hear living traditions. I always love learning about how th culture lived before. There are multiple “Mayan experiences on Cozumel Island but this one is the most authentic. It’s easy to forget your on an excursion.

 

When I compares it to ones I’ve tried in Honduras and puerta Maya the Otoch experience takes the cake when it comes to making your feel how the Mayans felt. You won’t just watch; you’ll smell the roasting cacao and feel the warmth of a traditional ceremony, leaving you with a genuine understanding of our culture that stays with you long after you leave.

My only downside to this is that it doesn’t work much check the “fun” box for us. We absolutely LOVED the 2+ hours of entertainment but we wanted to do some splashing and beach lounging. So we still ended up booking a day at the beach club. My suggestion is to pair this with a activity that isn’t long but also gets your access to the beach, and all the amenities that are included to complete the day.

The must try activity in cozumel is snorkeling. Tour lengths range from 1- 3 hours (choose when you book) and include multiple reefs, and the world famous El Cielo beach. Swim in water so clear you won’t believe your eyes! You can be sure you’re not dreaming because you can touch the starfish and feel the manta rays swimming at your feet to remind you. English speaking your guides prepare food fresh pico de gallo and beer.

 

 

The water is waist deep, making this snorkeling excursion a perfect activity for kids and families. You can snorkel almost anywhere on the island but for the best snorkeling experience like you see above and below you will need to book a Cozumel snorkeling tour.

 

El Cielo Reef is only accessible by boat which is why the water is so clear. Shore snorkeling is really cool but nothing, I mean NOTHING compares to the experience El cielo. Book the 10am tour and opt for the 3 hour excursion. This gives you enough time to spend on the beach relaxing before returning to the ship.

Things to do in Cozumel for adults

As a couple in cozumel, what’s important is seeing the person you care about smiling and happy. My suggestions below will guarantee you both enjoy each other without the distractions and annoyances common to travelers. These Cozumel activities for couples will take your mind off work and help you build memories to drown out your past (and future) mistakes.

The first time I visited Cozumel I proposed to my fiance at Secrets Aurora. Since then we have been back every year and tried almost all of the recommended “top” things in Cozumel for adults. Not all were as good as they sounded, so here are my personal suggestions for the top things to do in cozumel for couples.

 

Remember: More does NOT equal better. The point of vacation is to relax so don’t feel pressured to do everything.

 

 

Paradise Beach Club Day Pass

Cost: $75 person

Best for: ❌ Resort ❌ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

A beach club for the day seems like nothing special at first, but I promise you it’s heavily underrated. Like the saying goes “time flies when you’re having fun!”. A day spent at a PREMIUM beach club is exactly what every couple needs.

Delicious drinks, awesome music to remind you that your on vacation. Water toys, a refreshing pool and the sights and sounds of the ocean make for a combination to make any spouse happy. If you want to spice it up excursions are a easily added amenity usually just a few feet away.

The trick is choosing the RIGHT beach club that matches your tastes. We spent the day at Paradise Beach (pictured above) which is the undeniable best all-inclusive Beach Club experience you can get in cozumel. We got a cabana, did some Parasailing and ate (what I would call top tasting beach club food), swam and drank literally all day. She had zero complaints and for 7 hours we were the definition of happy tourists.

Beach clubs are not created equal and there are other great options for adults. You can’t just throw a dart and get a memorable experience. There are only a few I recommend for couples and I cover these in my Beach clubs in cozumel article.

 

Pirate Ship Cruise

Cost: $103 Person  |  Length: 3.5 hrs

A cool opportunity to eat, play experience the life of a pirate. This activity is an exciting maritime adventure that offers a unique experience aboard a themed ship.

I haven’t personally tried this tour but I’ve overheard many travelers talk about it. It’s a great experience for adults. Lots of music, drinking (tequila & beer) sexual innuendos. A engaging and super entertaining experience I personally wouldn’t recommend for kids.

 

 

Explore Cozumel In Buggy

Cost: $25-145 USD

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

Jeep tours are near the top of the list. The good ones will pick you up at your location (port or hotel). On the island, the tours can be either guided or unguided. I prefer the freedom to explore without limits. We rented a dune buggy (5-spd manual), scooter and a jeep to cruise the island. My favorite was the dune buggy because we got music 😉. Parking is easy and free.

Take Private Taxi Tour

Cost: $199 person

Experience the luxury of ZERO of planning. Literally, just lean back while a local friend (taxi driver) handles the driving, whisking you away to secret beaches and local eats so you can focus entirely on him/her and the view without a single worry about directions, traffic, etc.

We did it for 6 hours. They picked us up at our Airbnb, he asked us what we enjoyed, made suggestions and we said yes/no. Everything was included in the price except food. These tours are geared towards seeing things in Cozumel like culture and history. Not so much touristy “activities”. No jet skiing, ATV, Zipline.

Possible activities: punta sur, snorkeling, tequila tastin, Mayan ruins.

We stopped at the world famous Mojito. Swam at Chen Rio, punta sur and stopped to see the alligators. This took up 3 hours. He just hung out chatting with locals while we relaxed and drank. From time to time he would pop back up and check when we wanted to leave or if we needed anything. Overall a awesome experience.

Next we got our PRIVATE tequila experience. I personally loved it, nobody but us attended. Very intimate, delicious, fun activity. From there went to a cave that used to be a cenote.

 

Go Parasailing

Cost: $75 person

This is a bonus, 30 minutes of your day will lead to an unmatched photo opportunity with that person you care about. The best part is you won’t get wet. It’s a simple addition to your day. Consider it the cherry on top of an already epic vacation.

 

 

Jet Skiing Tour + Snorkel ⭐popular

Cost: $199 person

For couples wanting multiple activities like the exploration of underwater life this guided 90-min jet ski + snorkel tour is for you. It combines high octane excitement, jet skiing outside the typical limits with an opportunity to swim with tropical fish. Wrapping up the day with a complimentary meal and a relaxing time with the water at your feet with staff bringing the margaritas non stop.

Considered the perfect budget friendly activity for couples, this tour gets booked more than any of our activities. Usually couples have to choose between snorkeling or jet skiing. This tour combines both top activities with food and drinks + beach club access. One taxi ride, one tour, everything you need.

I’ve lived in Cozumel for over seven years and now I run tours here. If you asked me when I first came about Private tours I wouldn’t think they were a realistic option for many tourists, now I feel much different about it.

They aren’t for everyone but in certain cases they are definitely they best choice. If your unsure I will explain everything you need to know about Cozumel private tours in this article. Short answer to what you came here for:

Is a private snorkel tour worth it over a group tour? If there are more than four of you, yes almost always. For a solo traveler or a couple on a budget, a quality shared tour can be the smarter move.

How much does a private snorkel tour in Cozumel cost? Roughly $350–$450 for a small panga (1–6 people, 4 hours), $650+ for a mid-size charter (up to 10), and $1,200+ for a premium yacht. Per-person math further down.

What reefs do private tours hit? The main four are El Cielo, Palancar, Colombia, and the Turtle Sanctuary. Some operators (mine included) throw in El Cielito as a bonus stop. Details below.

 

 

Why Private Snorkeling Tours in Cozumel Hit Different

Picture this: you pay for a “group snorkel tour,” get on a boat, and there are 11 other people on it. The guide yells over an engine. You get 30 minutes at each stop, and half of that is spent waiting for the slowest swimmer in the pink life vest to make it back to the ladder. The reef below you looks like rush hour, fins kicking sand, phones in dive cases.

That’s the difference between a private Cozumel snorkel tour is not a “better boat” or “fancier equipment.” The difference is flexibility and comfort. The schedule, the stops, the pace, and who you’re sharing the day with are up to you.

The Best Reefs on a Cozumel Private Snorkel Tour

Here’s what a good private snorkel tour will actually visit. Not every boat goes to every reef — ask before you book.

 

El Cielo – This is the famous one, and it deserves the hype. Shallow sandbar (we’re talking 3–4 feet deep), calm water, starfish sitting on the white sand bottom and sting rays everywhere!

It’s more of a sandbar hangout than a reef, but it’s where everyone wants the photo. The catch: every boat in Cozumel goes here, so timing matters. A private captain can get you there at 8:30 AM before the group boats show up at 10.

 

Palancar Reef – This is the real deal for coral. Big, dramatic formations that drop off into blue water, and the visibility is usually pushing 100+ feet. You’ll see eagle rays gliding through, parrotfish the size of footballs, and if you’re lucky, a nurse shark tucked under a ledge. It’s deeper than El Cielo, so it’s better suited to confident snorkelers.

 

Colombia Reef – Drift snorkeling. The current does the work and you just float along watching the reef roll past underneath. This is where the bigger marine life shows up — turtles, rays, occasional reef sharks. You get off the boat at one end, the boat picks you up at the other. Group tours rarely do this well because they can’t wait around for stragglers. A private boat handles it naturally.

 

Turtle Sanctuary- Shallow, calm, family-friendly, and the turtles are basically guaranteed. My kids-on-their-first-snorkel crowd loves this one. You’ll see green turtles grazing on seagrass in water you can stand up in. If there’s anything that converts a nervous 8-year-old into a snorkeling believer, it’s this stop.

 

El Cielito (the bonus) – This is a smaller, less-crowded starfish spot that not every operator bothers with. Most group boats skip it because it adds 20 minutes to the route and they’re trying to turn the boat around for the afternoon run. A private tour has time for it. Ask before you book — “Do you include El Cielito?” is a good filter question for operator quality.

What’s usually NOT included — and where people get frustrated:

Mexican Marine Park fee: $10 USD per person, cash. This is the one that annoys everyone. It’s a legitimate government fee that funds reef conservation, not some scam the operator invented, but a lot of booking pages don’t mention it upfront. Now you know.

• Gratuity for captain and guide (15–20% of tour price is standard if they earned it)
• Hotel or dock taxes at certain piers (usually $2–5 per person, rare)
• Underwater camera rental
• Anything alcoholic beyond beer

 

Pro Tip from someone who’s been in the water here a dozen-plus times:Bring your own mask if you own one. The rental masks are fine, but rental masks are rental masks — they’ve been on a hundred faces this month.

• Reef-safe sunscreen (this matters — regular sunscreen is banned at the reefs)
• A dry bag or waterproof phone pouch

Real numbers, based on what the market actually charges in 2026:

Now do the math, because this is where it gets interesting.

A 4-hour small panga at $400 (at Jet Ski  Cozumel our tour is $420) split between 6 people, is $67 per person. A typical shared group snorkel tour in Cozumel runs $40–$80 per person — for a 20-person boat on a fixed schedule with no flexibility.

So if you have 4–6 people, you’re paying roughly the same per head as a group tour, and getting:

• A boat with only your people on it
• A captain who works for you, not a schedule
• More time at the reefs you like
• Zero waiting for strangers to get in and out of the water

Where private stops making financial sense:A couple traveling alone on a small panga is paying $175–$225 per person for 4 hours. A shared tour at $60 per person is objectively cheaper. Whether it’s worth the premium depends on how much you value the privacy and flexibility.

Where private becomes a no-brainer: A family of 5 or a group of 8 friends. At that group size, you’ve passed the break-even point and you’re paying less per person for a better experience. This is the move.

 

Pro Tip: 6-hour tours usually are a better deal but that’s a long time out on the water. Book the half day (4 hours) and enjoy the beach the rest of the day.

 

Common Itinerary for private boat tours

What you will gain in the flexibility from booking a private boat you do not gain in the ability to change the snorkeling itinerary. Boat tours are designed to go certain places for safety and regulation reasons but you will however maintain the freedom of how long you spend there. But this is ok because there are tons of benefits outside of changing the timeline of the itenary or the start time.

 

 

Private Snorkeling Tours in Cozumel for Cruise Passengers

This is where I see the most people get burned, so pay attention.

Yes, you can book a private snorkel tour from a cruise ship. No, you don’t have to go through the cruise line’s excursion desk (which is typically 2–3x the price for the same boat). But there are a few things cruise passengers specifically need to know.

Departure points: Cozumel has three main cruise piers — International, Puerta Maya, and Punta Langosta. Most reputable private snorkel operators depart from docks within a 5–10 minute walk or short taxi ride of all three. When you book, confirm the exact meeting dock and whether they meet you at the pier or expect you to find them.

 

Timing: A standard cruise stop in Cozumel is 7–8 hours. A 4-hour private snorkel tour fits inside that window comfortably — but only if you book the morning slot. Afternoon slots are where people get stressed trying to make it back before all-aboard.

My advice: book the earliest departure available. You’ll have calmer water, fewer boats at El Cielo, and a 2-hour cushion before your ship leaves.

 

The “what if the ship leaves early” question

Cruise ships occasionally leave port earlier than scheduled due to weather. At Jet Ski Cozumel we have a policy for this. We guarantee you’ll be back at the pier with time to spare.

 

How far in advance to book

Peak cruise season (December–April), book 2–4 weeks ahead. Small pangas sell out first. Off-season, a week is usually fine. Don’t try to walk up and book day-of unless you like disappointment.

I’m not going to tell you private is always the answer. It isn’t.

A shared group tour is the smarter call if:

• You’re traveling solo and don’t mind meeting people on the boat
• You’re a couple on a tight budget and $120 for both of you is the right number
• You just want to tick “snorkeled in Cozumel” off the list — not maximize the experience
• You’re first-time snorkelers who want the reassurance of a bigger operation with more staff in the water

 

 A private tour wins if:

• You have 4+ people in your group (math almost always works)
•  You have kids, especially nervous or first-time snorkelers
• You’re on a cruise schedule and can’t afford to wait on 18 other people
• You want specific stops (El Cielito, Colombia drift, whatever) — group boats won’t customize
• You’ve done a group tour before and hated the crowding

 

Simple recommendation matrix:

•  Solo or couple, budget→ shared group tour
• Couple, experience-minded → small private panga
• Family of 3–4 → small private panga (break-even with better experience)
• Family of 5+ or group of friends → private, almost always cheaper per person

 

Tips for Booking a Private Snorkeling Tour in Cozumel

Book direct with a local operator when you can. Online travel agencies (Viator, GetYourGuide, etc.) mark up 20–30%. Same boat, same captain, you just paid extra for the middleman.

Make sure to read private snorkel tour reviews: Anyone can advertise a “amazing trip” but in my personal experience nothing tells you the truth better than reading a review from a genuine customer. Don’t skip this part.

Confirm the Marine Park fee is disclosed: Ifthey don’t mention it on the booking page, ask. If they act surprised at the question, that’s a yellow flag.

Ask how many stops are included and whether El Cielo is guaranteed: Some cheaper operators do 2 stops and claim “3” by counting the drift. Get specifics.

Best time of year: November through April. Visibility is at its peak, seas are calm, water is in the upper 70s. June through October is hurricane season — still great most days, but cancellations happen.

What cancels a tour: Sustained winds over 20 knots, red flag from the port captain, or tropical storm systems. Any operator canceling for weather should refund or reschedule without hassle.

Fair cancellation policy: 48-hour full refund if you cancel. 100% refund or free reschedule if they cancel for weather. Anything less and keep looking.

Is Cozumel Mexico safe? Yes. As of February 2026, Cozumel remains one of the safest destinations in Mexico, with a violent crime rate significantly lower than popular mainland spots like Cancun or Tulum. But “safe” doesn’t mean “risk-free.”

It wasn’t too long ago that I had the same questions back in 2018 when my fiancée and I booked our first 7-day all-inclusive vacation to Cozumel, Mexico. It was just two months ago I took a cruise back to Cozumel, making it my 17th visit to the island.

Is it safe to get off a cruise ship in Cozumel?

Yes, it is very safe to get off a cruise ship in Cozumel. The island has three dedicated international piers, Puerta Maya, the International Pier, and Punta Langosta, all of which have strict security protocols.

They are heavily trafficked and secured. The government and local policy provide a heavy police presence in cruise zones, making it one of the safest ports in the Caribbean for families and solo travelers.

Unlike many other ports, it is safe to walk directly off your ship and explore the town. Exploring the downtown area, which extends safely for roughly four blocks from the waterfront. Cozumel taxi rates in 2026 are affordable and if you read the blog you can save 50% on a ride.

Your biggest danger in any of these (port) areas is your pocketbook by spending more money than you planned. Either buying the same old souvenirs and regretting it later or saying yes to family wanting to try this activity and this tour.

 

⚠️ Cruise Passengers Read This ⚠️

 

Cozumel port closures happen 5-10x a month, but most travelers don’t know this until the day of. When wind or weather forces a port closure, all docking in Cozumel shut down and most operators keep your money. Their 24-hour cancellation policy doesn’t care that you found out that morning. I’ve watched this happen to passengers who booked through Viator, their cruise line, and local companies.

So I created a free tool for travelers arriving by cruise ship to know important details 5 days sooner. Don’t get caught off guard like other tourists.

 

There is zero danger in these places so go out and explore but I recommend against booking activities with people like these. Instead try these inexpensive and free things to do in cozumel. They are selling the most heavily marked up tours and activities on the island, aside from the cruise lines own tour options.

 

Is Cozumel safer Than Cancun

Yes, Cozumel is widely considered a safer destination for tourists than Cancun. Cozumel is a smaller island community that relies heavily on tourism, leading to a much lower overall crime rate, especially violent crime.

Cozumel has more of a relaxed, dive focused and family-oriented environment. Cancun has a bigger party scene that can lead to routier behavior and more incidents. So it depends on what kind of trip your going for.

 

Cozumels Crime Stats

Let me help you shed any remaining fears with objective, no-bias data. The island’s commitment to safety is reflected in its Safety Index rating, which is consistently reported as High by Numbeo, a respected global crime stat tracking site. 

The Cozumel Crime Index as of today (February 2026) is 34.22. This has dropped consistently over the last 5 years meaning less crime. So, yes, Cozumel is safe for tourists right now. In Cozumel you will see multiple types of police presence patrolling the streets.

 

Common Crimes 

Since my original writing of this article back in 2023 the common crimes haven’t changed. I did myself experience having my stuff stolen while in one of the shopping areas near the beach, but overall theft has reduced along with the overall crime. Here are some of the most common petty crimes.

• Purse Snatching

• Theft

Yes, you should exercise caution when traveling abroad but nothing more than any other place. I walked every night and seen women along other Americans walking alone during the night.

Cozumel Travel Advisory: Is It Safe for Americans

Yes, there is currently an active Level 2 Travel advisory for Mexico. It was issued on August 12, 2025 which includes Cozumel San Miguel. What does this mean for American tourists? I’ll explain:

The U.S. The State Department publishes these official advisors to inform Americans on potential travel dangers when leaving the country. Don’t let this scare you, keep reading to understand why Cozumel is safe for American tourists to visit in spite of the advisory.

The “Level 2” designation is the same level currently applied to many popular and safe European destinations like France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. It simply signals that you should use the same level of common-sense vigilance you would in any major international city. 

The advisory is specifically for the Mexican state of Quintana Roo not Cozumel. It’s important to know the difference. Now I will explain what the advisory level really means.

The U.S. State Department uses a four-level risk system. Level 2 is a common international standard that advises visitors to exercise increased caution but that should be done anytime you visit a foreign country. Wouldn’t you agree?

What it does NOT mean: It does not mean Cozumel is life-threatening or dangerous.

What it means: Be careful, cautious and follow these simple tips when traveling:

• Be aware of your surroundings
• Keep an eye on your belongings
• Don’t carry large amounts of cash
• Be careful to accept drinks from strangers
• Be aware of potential scams

All of these things you would tell someone you care about to do on a night out in America. Cozumel is a very calm and relaxing island. I previously had other things on this list to keep people safe but as the years have gone on I decided to remove some things. Just know it’s a great place to visit and even buy a condo.

As an American tourist myself I can honestly say Cozumel is very safe for Americans and any other foreigner to visit and walk around safely any time of day. If you just stay on the cruise ship or in the resort you’re missing out.

The cool bars come alive at night and during the day activities like parasailing are a quick and safe way to get some unforgettable memories under your belt. 

 

Cozumel is a tourist island and American tourists make up the largest chunk of visitors. Everywhere you look you will see an American traveler. You will also see any of these four types of police presence:

• Local Policia
• Marina Police
• Federal Police 
• National Guard

Lastly, when you see how the native community lives you will feel safer instantly. For this reason I encourage you if you’re staying for more than a 8- hour port call to rent a vehicle and REALLY explore the island. It’s really a calm, relaxed environment. Fathers dropping their daughters off to school. Families piling onto a scooter to grab a late night bite to eat. 

Speaking of food, I tried over 36 restaurants both in the main Centro area and .5 miles away from the ferry where the owners were a wife and husband who turned their garage into a dining area. This was my #2 favorite place but the food is unmatchable to what you typically see near the ferry.

The photo above is from there. I forgot the owners name but they were the sweetest couple and the most flavor packed authentic tacos. As you can see the locals are the frequent customers. Is it safe to walk in Cozumel at night?

Cozumel is not just safe during the day, you can feel safe at night also. The place where you will feel safest is in or near Centro. Street food vendors setup, families setup tents to sell souvenirs it feels like a very small town.

Night time is a better experience in some ways because the main brick and mortar shops close up. They are the more “pesty” sales people always pulling you into their shops. During this time you can just enjoy your stroll.

You will see Americans who live here a couple months a year or people like staying in a airbnb just casually exploring. 

 

 

Is It Safe To Drink The Water In Cozumel

No, you should not drink the water directly from the tap in Cozumel. While the island’s water supply is treated, contamination can occur in the distribution pipes or in the holding tanks of individual buildings. Not even the locals drink the water from the faucets. 

Hotels and established restaurants use purified water to make ice, and it is safe to use tap water for showering and general washing, but use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth.

What not to do in Cozumel

I cover those extensively in my dedicated article of what to avoid in Cozumel mexico. For a safe and enjoyable trip, here are a few key things to avoid in Cozumel, based on common tourist concerns:

Is It Safe To Eat In Cozumel?

Yes, eating local cuisine and drinking prepared drinks (including cocktails) is safe in Cozumel. When it comes to eating and drinking in Cozumel, the island has a plethora of options ranging from high-end restaurants to local street food and of course a seemingly unlimited supply of tequila.

They store and prepare food largely differently than in developed countries such as the US. The hygiene standards are above average but not stellar if you ask me. I still highly recommend you drink bottled or purified water.

Be careful not to indulge heavily in things you don’t already typically eat at home. Eating too much fresh fruit or things your not used to can give you the runs. To Avoid getting sick make sure to wash your hands often, and be mindful of what you eat and drink.

Are there any areas to avoid in Cozumel?

While Cozumel is exceptionally safe, you should avoid wandering into deep residential “Colonias” (like San Gervasio or Adolfo López Mateos) after dark, where lighting and security are minimal.

On the East Coast, avoid being on the roads after sunset due to a total lack of streetlights. Outside of these two scenarios Cozumel is very safe and there aren’t any areas tourists should directly avoid.

Is it safe to eat street food?

If street food is what you seek this will be your treasure trove. Prices are cheap and food uniqueness is high! Below I ordered a fried egg that would be stuffed with Nutella. I can’t remember the formal name but you will taste some insanely unique food combinations that are well deserved when on vacation.

There isn’t a lot to choose from because the island’s locals are fairly “ sleepy”. Even cozumels dry weather in December can’t make this island party crazy. They aren’t big on parties, or drinking. Therefore there aren’t bad people to worry about preying on intoxicated tourists.

There nothing whole to worry about here it is just as safe to walk around Cozumel during the night as it is during the day. More peaceful and authentic to!

Is It Safe to Walk Around Cozumel?

Yes, walking around Cozumel is very safe, especially in the tourist-frequented areas located on the West side of the island. Numbeo rates walking in Cozumel as 90% during the day and 68% at night. This sate was updated the 14th of August 2025.

Here’s my opinion. During my stay, I spent my every morning and evening walking when I wasn’t riding the scooter hehe. Early before the solicitors/salespeople are out and late in the day long after they are packed up for the night.

 

It was comfortable, with no presence of gangs, cartels, or sketchy people. At night, you’ll see couples giggling, holding hands walking down the street, or groups of locals standing outside a local drinking spot. Your biggest worry while walking is getting sunburnt. This includes the area near the Ferry, Cruise Port, Resorts, and Cozumel’s Downtown area. 

 

Local Safety Measures

One of the key safety measures in place by Cozumels local authorities is no drinking in public. In order to keep travelers safe and in check the police do not allow open intoxicants out on the street.

For Example: you can’t get a drink at a local bar and walk down the street with it legally.

 

Best Way To Get Around Cozumel

The safest and most recommended transportation option for tourists in Cozumel is licensed taxis or private shuttle service. Taxies are the safest way to get around. Key Recommendation: Taxis are regulated, convenient, and the safest choice for short trips and transfers from the airport or cruise port. 

Alternative Safe Option: Renting a car or Jeep provides the protection of a four-wheeled vehicle and is ideal for exploring the less-traveled areas of the island. Consider it as a way to get around.

Taxis are easy to hail, reasonably priced, and convenient. There are many ways to traverse the island, with many taxi drivers, my personal favorite being the Scooter Rental, but that isn’t for everyone. When taking an official taxi agree on the fare before starting your journey to avoid any misunderstandings. Pesos or US Dollars are acceptable.

Cozumel taxis are very safe right along with shuttles and other transportation. This isn’t the mainland. Cozumels government protect their reputation because tourism is their only lifeline. You aren’t going to get kidnapped or harmed in any way.

No, getting a taxi in cozumel is very easy. The local taxis have a red strip down the side and remind me of fire ants because you literally see them everywhere. Beach clubs and all inclusive resorts always have cabs on standby.

 

 

For Airbnb or Villa customers the doorman will call you a taxi. My Recommendation is to download Whatsapp, get the drivers number and message them directly for better service. It’s totally normal because they all are independent contractors.

 

Cozumel Motocabs

You may see these small red 2-person taxis in Cozumel but they are not for tourists. These Motocabs are a small local fleet servicing the locals. They have no government permissions or licensing yet.

The best way to get around Cozumel is by taxi or rental car. Taxis are highly reliable and offer fixed rates between downtown and major beach clubs like Playa San Francisco.

Taxi prices in cozumel are based on the number of people and generally range from $10-$40 but prices fluctuate based on your location. For quick trips within town for 1-2 people you can expect to pay $10–$20 USD, while a taxi to a beach clubs (further from downtown) typically range from $20 to over $40 USD. Taxi prices are split into two pricing brackets.

 

 

For travelers with larger groups of people (over 8) you will have to take multiple taxis. Don’t try to squeeze multiple people into a taxi. But there are other cheat codes to saving money on tax rides on Cozumel.

I’ve watched this happen to hundreds of passengers who booked through Viator, their cruise line, and local companies. Don’t be caught off guard.

Now airport shuttles are the most expensive, often falling between $40 and $60 USD. Always confirm the final price in either pesos or USD with your driver before getting in the vehicle to avoid surprises, keeping in mind that night rates are higher.

You can save 50% of the taxi cost by sharing a ride with someone. Prices are for 1-4 people, so two couples going to the same place and the taxi costs $20 per couple that’s $40.

But if you make friendly with strangers while standing in line and act like “old” friends meeting up on vacation they can only change you for a group rate instead of two separate groups!

Getting a taxi from any cruise port in cozumel is super easy but chaotic. For example at Puerta Maya or the International Terminal, you have to walk through the “duty-free maze” to get to the taxi stand (shown below). The dispatchers there will shout prices at you in addition to all the street sellers trying to get your money.

A Cozumel Taxi Tour aka “private tour” is something a lot of people don’t know about. You can actually hire a regular taxi driver by the hour to be your private chauffeur for the day. These are a great way to pack a lot of experiences in a single day even if your on a cruise ship. Beach, food, tasting, mayana ruin, and watersports activity all for a flat price. We call this the “Island Loop.” You grab a driver at the pier or your hotel and say, “How much for 4 hours?” A standard private tour is usually for 1-4 people and runs $40 – $50 USD per hour. If you have a larger group and need a van (5-8 people), expect $70 – $90 USD per hour.

Catching a taxi at cozumel airport

The Cozumel International Airport (CZM) is a federal zone. This means regular red/white city taxis cannot pick you up curbside. Instead you will see different kinds of shuttles and there are a lot!

After your out of the airport property you will only be able to hail taxis with the red strip like everyone else noore shuttles u less your staying at a resort. When I stayed at Secrets Azul the front desk had shuttles to take US back to the airport ready.

The Airport “Hack” No One Tells You About

The Expensive Way:

Buy a ticket for the “Flex Shuttle” (collective van) inside the airport. It’s about $10-$15 per person, but you have to wait for the van to fill up, and it stops at every hotel along the way.

The Local Hack: Walk out of the airport terminal, turn left, and walk about 200 yards to the main road (Boulevard Aeropuerto). Cross the street to Diego’s Tacos. Regular city taxis hang out there. You’ll pay half the price and leave immediately.

Can you pay for a taxi with a credit card in Cozumel?

Taxis in Cozumel do not take credit cards. Almost never. Most taxis are cash only. If you try to pay with a card, they will laugh or drive you to an ATM. Bring Pesos or small USD bills ($1s, $5s, $10s). Drivers “never” have change for a $20 or $50.

 

How much to tip taxi drivers in Cozumel?

It’s not mandatory, but if they help with bags or give you good recommendations, 10-15% (or 20-50 Pesos) is standard.

 

Is it easy to get a taxi at the cruise ports?

I have vacationed in Cozumel 17 times and now live here 3 months a year. First I stayed at Secrets Aurora Cozumel, then Airbnb’s and finally a cruise (below). My tips on what not to do in Cozumel are simple, no-bs advice that a first time visitor or frequent traveler can use to make your Cozumel trip even better!

As an American tourist and now part-time local I know the best time to visit Cozumel and I have a much different perspective of recommendations for things to avoid as an American tourist. Get familiar before you arrive by discovering the common mistakes travelers make.

Don’t Buy Anything

*Golden Rule*

I’m serious, don’t buy anything for 45 minutes! The second you get here, local people will be shoving junk trinkets, overpriced drinks and low quality tours in your face. Most of these places are tourist traps. This will happen 3-4 times before you make it 1/4 mile.

It’s how they make a living, but that doesn’t mean you have to be the sucker paying $17 for a $3 margarita at the airport. I made this mistake my 1st time arriving. I was excited to get the party started and decided to buy a drink waiting for the shuttle bus to fill so we could leave. Five minutes after drinking it I felt taken advantage of.

If you see something you want, WAIT. I promise it will be there when you come back. Likely, two shops down the street you will get offered it again! This lets you compare your options and prevents you from feeling like you got taken advantage of. The photo below shows you where the pier stops and the locals sales pressure starts.

After this point, shop sales people working on commissions will offer you all kinds of fake stuff. Punta Lagosta is the worst but every major point of entry is the same. Just kindly say ” no thank you” if you reply in Spanish they use that as an opportunity to stop you and talk more.

There is nothing that will save you more money, hassle or headaches than kindly telling local street sellers no. If you prefer saving money, you will love my tips on free things to do in Cozumel. Yes, shopping in cozumel is safe, but if you do nothing but remember this golden rule you will love it here.

What Not to Buy in Cozumel

Avoid buying these five items from street vendors, cruise port shops, and tourist zone stores in Cozumel. They are the most likely counterfeited or unsafe products sold to tourists, and 95% are fake.

• Vanilla – often contains a banned toxin
• Tequila – cheap stuff marked up 3-5x
• Cuban cigars – knock-offs
• Fake luxury bags – counterfeit designer goods
• Steroids – illegal to bring back to the U.S.

 

The “free tequila tour” is often a setup, not always. Most tequilas here are cheap stuff you can buy at Mega grocery store for a fraction (I cover that in the free things blog). Cuban cigars couldn’t possibly be real at those prices. And the vanilla? That’s the one most tourists don’t know to avoid, so let me break it down.

 

Don’t Buy Vanilla from Street Vendors or Cruise Port Shops

Avoid buying vanilla from street vendors and cruise port shops in Cozumel. Most of it contains “coumarin” a compound banned in the U.S. because it can cause liver and kidney damage. The rest is usually fake or diluted with water. You’ll see entire shelves of cheap “Mexican vanilla” in walk-in tourist shops. Be cautious!

Authentic Mexican vanilla does exist, and it’s incredible. But buy it from a grocery store like Mega or Chedraui, not from a port vendor.

 

Buying vanilla in Cozumel, do these 3 things:

• Get extract, not concentrate
• Check the ingredients for “coumarin”
• Open it and taste it immediately BEFORE you walk away

 

I’ve seen entire sections of these bottles lined up in port-side shops for $8-$15 a bottle. Real vanilla extract cost more than that for a reason. If the price feels too good, it is.

What Should You Avoid in Cozumel?

Avoid these six things in Cozumel: drinking tap water, buying from street vendors in the first 45 minutes, renting scooters without experience, using money exchanges, drinking alcohol in public, and booking tours from port solicitors. These are the most common mistakes tourists make, and each one costs you either money, time, or your health.

 

Here’s the short version of what to avoid and why:

• Tap water: not safe to drink anywhere in Cozumel, even for locals

• Street vendor purchases: wait 45 minutes before buying anything; you’ll see the same items cheaper two shops down

• Money exchanges: offer the worst rates; use bank ATMs at Scotia Bank or Mega instead

• Public drinking: illegal in Cozumel, even with a beer walking between bars

• Scooter rentals (if you’re inexperienced):high accident rate for tourists

• Tours from port solicitors: Sometimes fake, resold, or marked up 30%

Don’t Drink The Tap Water

⚠️ IMPORTANT ⚠️

The tap water in Cozumel is simply not safe for drinking. Do not drink the tap water anywhere in cozumel. Always use bottled water or purified water sources. It is safe to brush your teeth with it just don’t swallow the water.

The water is so unsafe even locals use bottled water. Cozumels water contains harmful bacteria and parasites that can make you sick. Even if you’re lucky enough not to get sick, it’s simply not worth risking it.

Drink ONLY bottled water and read Cozumel foods that can make you sick so you know what to avoid. It’s not that expensive and you can find it at most supermarkets, convenience stores, and restaurants.

Don’t Buy Fake Tours

Cozumel is safe, but locals assume Americans are made of money. There are shady people AND companies. Street sellers, outright frauds will promise an amazing tour, collect and hand you off to a partner.

When you arrive the staff ask you to pay $20-$70 more and because you paid the first guy you met your money is gone! Beware of all solicitors and tour peddlers. There are tons of them.

Amazing vacations don’t just happen they come from research and planning like your doing now.

Don’t forget to bring cash

I recommend you go to your bank and get $200 in singles. This isn’t only for Cozumel but your entire vacation. You can use it to pay for small souvenirs, tipping, taxi rides and lots of other little things your not thinking of right now.

Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere (except in taxis)in Cozumel but sometimes vendors raise the conversion rate to make your US dollar less valuable and bundle it in with your total. When you read the receipt it all looks confusing because you don’t know the peso conversion off the top of your head.

 

Don’t Assume Taxis Are Everywhere

Taxis are the best way to get around in Cozumel, but they are not everywhere. The blog has tips that can save you BIG money. Major tourist areas, all-inclusive resorts, cruise ports and most popular Cozumel beach clubs have taxis on standby. Outside of them taxis will require a little more effort. Cozumel now hasa taxi app you can use which I cover in the blog above.

Resorts and Airbnb Villas have a door man that will call a cab for you, but if you’re staying at a smaller place you will need your own car, jeep or scooter. If your staying far from town consider the fact its usually $10 minimum to get anywhere for two people which means bills add up quickly, so plan accordingly.

Pro Tip: These taxis are only for locals, tourists are NOT allowed to use this service. Tourists are only allowed to use the licensed state taxis to get around. you cannot use the small three wheel ones no matter how fun they look, sorry!

 

International Phone Travel Plan

I made this mistake in the Dominican Republic. Call your cell phone company and ask them “I’m leaving the country I need to start my travel plan”. Most major cell phone carriers have a plan that costs $10-$12/day. This lets you enjoy your trip without worrying about WiFi which is iffy at beach clubs.

You can preset the days your leaving months in advance so it starts when you leave and end the day after you get back. I knew better but forgot and 5 days in Punta Cana costs me over $640 in international cellular rates!

 

Don’t Underestimate The Sun

Common mistake

The sun can dehydrate you quickly especially when combined with the Mojitos, Margaritas and shots of Tequila. Tourist always drink a lot because of the legal drinking age in cozumel. Headaches, nausea and cramps come on faster than you expect, so be sure to drink more water than you normally do.

We all think we can’t get burnt. Well, at least some of us do. So I didn’t put on any sunblock. Sure enough on day two everything was soar and burnt. I spent 3 days avoiding the sun after that. Learn from my mistake and put on at least SPF 50 sunscreen now everytime and this is what I use.

It’s great for him & her and doesn’t leave a oily residue. Personally as a man I didn’t mind the smell of it at all. Order Sun Bum Reef friendly Sunblock here or pick it up at Target and be ready for vacation. Fellas if your reading this she will be happy you chose such a good one!

If you forget to bring the sunblock you can expect to pay around $31 for a 6 oz bottle of cheap stinky stuff. If you order these from amazon you get two travel size bottles.

 

Don’t Stay in The Tourist Zone

If you stay in the major port, your all-inclusive resort or popular tourists zones your missing out on tons of culture. I know many of you are wondering is Cozumel safe right now but there are fewer places in your cruise itinerary that are safer.

Away from the port you will find the best tasting local food for pennies! This photo above (sorry you can’t really see the tacos) is proof my advice is genuine. I got 3 BIG tacos for $2! I paid in pesos which always helps. The savings and flavors beyond the main areas are so worth it!

Should You Skip Renting a scooter?

If you choose to skip renting a scooter and exploring cozumel your missing out. This is where I disagree with other travel blogs. Scooters in Cozumel are safe, but they are not for everyone so keep reading but before you do watch the 60 second video showing what’s it’s like in Cozumel at night time. You be the judge if you should rent a scooter.

It costs $25/day to rent a scooter which is what you will spend on a single taxi trip for two people. Contrary to popular advice, scooter rentals in very popular in Cozumel. No, they aren’t for everyone but you can see from photos below it’s not as dangerous are many make it seem. Scooters are cheap, fun, simple to operate and parking is easy. You can find a place to rent them just as easy as finding a taxi, but if you want to explore the island they are a far cheaper and in my opinion scooter are the most ideal way to get around island.

With a scooter you have the freedom to go anywhere at your own pace. It’s ideal for exploring public beaches in cozumel. It makes Chen Rio and Coconuts Bar & Grill within your finger tips.

Scooters are 50% of the traffic on cozumels streets. It’s the primary method of travel for locals for sure, and I always see tourists riding around on them. I’ve seen some crazy things like an entire family on a scooter (4 people) like you see below.

Who Should Not Rent a Scooter?

Avoid renting a scooter in Cozumel if your not experienced and confident. You need to be able to adapt to the pace of the island which isn’t very fast but during busy times of you questions your abilities it can be dangerous. If you’re not used to driving in unfamiliar territory, riding on 2 wheels, and don’t have the confidence.

Add to that the fact that cozumel has a high number of road accidents (many of which involve tourists – especially intoxicated ones – on scooters), and it’s best to leave the driving to the pros. Consider hiring a driver or taking a taxi to get to us for your exciting parasailing adventure instead. Save the scootering for when you’re back home.

Avoid Drinking in Public

Cozumel isn’t like Vegas you CANNOT drink alcohol in public. It’s illegal. Drinking is fully expected especially from 18 year olds but no walking down the street with a beer. No open containers. Keep it under controle and at establishments.

Do Not Leave Your Valuables Out

Petty theft is the most common crime in cozumel. It happens the most near Beach clubs when travelers are swimming and drinking at both all inclusive resorts and public beach clubs. It isn’t always the locals, it can be anyone who wants what you have and thinks you will blame a worker. Avoid the headache all together and always keep an eye on your stuff.

• Take turns watching the valuables
• Use a towel to cover the important things
• Use Lockers at beach clubs
• Only take card & cash you NEED

Do Not Touch The Wildlife

This is a big No-No, and we often have to remind customers who book our all-inclusive Cozumel snorkeling tour not to touch the star fish and manta rays. Our guided snorkel tours stop at 3 coral reefs and El Cielo beach where the water so clear its unbelievable, but you should always resist the urge.

While it’s tempting when your up close and personal with these creatures, it’s important to remember that they are wild animals and should be treated with respect. There are such things as dangerous animals in cozumel. Making mistakes like our customer below is a perfect example of what not to do in Cozumel mexico.

Touching or disturbing the wildlife can cause them stress and harm, especially if you’re dealing with sea creatures like coral and starfish, which are incredibly fragile. Remember – this is their home, and you’re just a guest. If you do want to swim with sea turtles or rays, choose a responsible tour operator who follows ethical guidelines.

Can I use American dollars in Cozumel

Yes, you can use your American money in cozumel. US dollars are preferred by locals especially in tourist areas, but using Mexican pesos often gets you better prices and avoids unfavorable exchange rates or getting change in pesos. Here is a simple visual to summarize it.

For larger purchases or more authentic experiences, pesos are best, but dollars (small bills) work for taxis, tips, and tourist shops, while credit cards offer protection but may have fees.

Using USD in Cozumel:

Accepted Everywhere (Tourist Areas): Hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops, and major grocery stores (Mega, Chedraui).

Don’t Use Money Exchanges

Tourists should avoid using money exchanges in Cozumel to swap your USD to pesos. America currency is widely accepted and if you need more cash ATM’s are all over. The money exchanges offer the worst conversion rates possible. Cozumel has two major banks downtown, Scotia Bank and Banco where you can access a atm 24 hours a day or at Mega Grocery store.

If you find yourself needing cash at the atm you will be asked to accept or decline the ATM’s exchange rate (see photo below). Always DECLINE ATM conversion rate, this will give you the best conversion which defaults to the countries standard which will be about 7% better for you.

The photo below is one I took at the Mega supermarket which is located on the Av Rafael Melgar (the main front road) about 1/2 mile from the Cozumel international cruise port. When you use it or any other ATM you will be asked if you want to accept the conversion rate. Always DECLINE it and you will get the countries national rate.

Don’t Skip Learning Basic Spanish

Most of the locals speak English and they speak it well, but not everyone does. You will ALWAYS have questions and these basic phrases will help you get them answered faster and will a smile. I promise you will feel more confident when you understand at least some basic phrases. Imagine if you could order a drink in spanish!

Also, you will find that everyone is more friendly when you show a effort to learning the basics. Here are a few that really helped me out.

Basic Spanish phrases for tourists

• Pu-e-do tenner – Can I have?
• Teines – Do you have?
• Donde El banjo – Where is the restroom?
• Buenos dias – Goodmorning!
• Por favor – Please
• Gracias señor – Thank you sir
• Que hora es – What time is it?
• Con Permiso – Excuse me

 

Everyone will know EXACTLY what you mean You will notice I skipped all the basic stuff like hi and bye because you will pick those up naturally! These are all I formal but very Focus on these that will help you with the things that are important.

 

Don’t Forget to Ask For Bill

Unlike in some countries, waiters in Cozumel won’t bring the bill to your table unless you ask for it. It’s not a matter of forgetfulness, but one of respect – servers want to make sure you’ve had time to savor your meal. So, if you’re ready to pay, catch the waiter’s attention and say, “la cuenta, por favor.” Don’t forget that tipping is also a crucial part of the service industry in Cozumel. As a general rule, it’s customary to tip between 10 to 20 percent of the total bill.

Taxi Overcharges

We already covered skipping the scooter – so taking a taxi is the next best option. However, you need to be aware of taxi overcharges. Click here to view Cozumel taxis rates. You won’t hear this very often, but Cozumel is infamous for drivers who take advantage of tourists and overcharge for rides.

To avoid this, read our blog on taxis and always confirm the price before getting into the taxi. You can also ask for a receipt to make sure you’re getting the proper fare.

Avoid Timeshare Tours

Here’s another tip you won’t hear very often – skip the timeshare. This is only for resort tourists not cruise passengers. Largely they end up being a waste of precious time for a free excursion. Time is money, avoid the headache. Cozumel is known for its many beautiful resorts, and while timeshares might seem like a good investment at first, they can lead to unexpected expenses and obligations in the future. Save yourself the trouble and avoid the timeshare presentations entirely.

What not to do in Cozumel at night

The currents in the area can be strong, so it’s important to listen to the warnings and stay out of the water until it is safe to do so – yes, even if you consider yourself an excellent swimmer!

Are There Any Places to Avoid in Cozumel?

One of the first places we would recommend avoiding is the neighborhood of San Miguel. Although it’s the island’s largest town and has plenty of shops and restaurants, it can also be overcrowded and too touristy. Instead, we suggest heading to the southern part of the island, where you’ll find more secluded beaches and a peaceful atmosphere.

Another area to avoid is the cruise ship terminal, especially when several ships are docking at the same time. It can get extremely crowded, and prices for food and souvenirs are often higher here. If you want to fully enjoy your time in Cozumel, consider exploring some of the lesser-known spots that offer breathtaking natural beauty and fewer crowds.

 

What should I be careful of in Cozumel?

Cozumel is considered one of Mexico’s safest tourist destinations, but you should still be careful of:

Tap Water: Be careful to only drink bottled or purified water (avoid tap water).

Petty Theft: Keep a close eye on your personal belongings and bags, especially in crowded tourist areas like the port and downtown.

Money: Bring cash, use ATMs like those inside banks or stores and skip money exchanges.

Tours and Goods: Don’t book tours on the street. Don’t buy counterfeit cigars.

Street vendor purchases: wait 45 minutes before buying anything; you’ll see the same items cheaper two shops down

Public drinking: illegal in Cozumel, even with a beer walking between bars

Scooter rentals (if you’re inexperienced):high accident rate for tourists

Vanilla: skip the fake, diluted stuff.

Cozumel weather in january is very different from most of North America. Is January a good time to go to cozumel? Four years ago I came on the Enchantment of the season cruise and got off to stay in cozumel for an extra 3 weeks. Now I will share my experience on weather and the best things to do in Cozumel during your vacation.

While the majority of North America and Europe is freezing we get to focus on your tropical getaway. So, what is the weather like in Cozumel in January? Is February a good time to go to cozumel?

February is an excellent time to go to Cozumel, and what I would call the sweet spot. February is near the beginning of what’s known as “peak” season which is when most travelers head south to the Caribbean for sunshine.

 

Cozumel’s temps in January hover comfortably around 82 degrees during the day meaning you can enjoy the best Cozumel beach clubs comfortably. If you hate sweating through their clothes this is a great time for you to come. It’s the dry season, which means the air is crisp. It only rains 4-5 days a month here but you have to be prepared for the “Norte” effects.

I spend most of my days in a t-shirt and shorts. Every now and then, a cold front from the north “Norte” sweeps in. It won’t make you freeze, but it can make the boat rides choppy and the evenings surprisingly brisk. When this happens cruise ships can’t dock meaning no port call for you and if you booked a tour on Viator.com or another large company say goodbye to your money.

 

For those of you who booked any of our Cozumel Jet ski Rentals in advance your 20% deposit is safe. Unlike Viator, we don’t have restrictions forcing you to cancel 24 hours in advance. Bad weather happens. Hangovers happen especially during this time of year so we make sure you are covered.

When the sun goes down, it hits about 70°F. If you’re sitting at a place like the Thirsty Cougar or Money bars live karaoke because you’re above the legal drinking age in Cozumel that ocean breeze might catch you off guard after a day in the sun. Trust me, bring a light hoodie or a denim jacket. You’ll see the tourists who didn’t pack one shivering over their margaritas while the locals are all wearing light sweaters.

 

Is it too cold to swim in Cozumel in February?

Yes, the water is warm enough for swimming but it might take you a second to jump in. The water sits around 79°F. It’s not “bath water” warm like Cozumel weather in August, but it’s crystal clear. The highlight of February for me is the Eagle Rays. I joined an El Cielo Snorkeling tour to shoot some content for the website and saw four of them gliding right under me. See the epic photo below.

They migrate here during the winter months, and because the water visibility is at its peak (often 100ft+), you can see them from a mile away. But you can NOT see them from shore. You have to take one of our Cozumel snorkeling tours. We have 1 or 3 hour tours that include food, multiple coral reefs and the chance to get up close and personal with them!

 

If you’re doing a snorkeling tour to El Cielo, the water is shallow and stays warm, but the boat ride back can be cold when you’re wet and the wind is hitting you. So be sure to bring the towel from my packing list below and have a dry change of clothes. What to wear in February

When I started visiting Cozumel I always overpacked. Now I know the trick to a Caribbean vacation is layers. Don’t pack anything heavy. Opt for polyester over cotton and no dark colors. Cruise passengers won’t need a hoodie but if you’re staying in a resort or Airbnb it’s essential for a multi-day vacation.

Notice how no bloody is wearing hoodies, which I usually the case. But ok the off chance you get the cold draft you will wish you had the sweater. It’s always bring multiple swimming suits and invest in a good pair of sunglasses.  Here are a few other things you should not forget:

Daytime Essentials

• Swimwear (multiple)
• Light cotton t-shirts
• flip-flops
• Thin long sleeve (optional)

Sun Protection: Sunglasses are a must so invest in a good pair, and SPF 50 sunscreen.

Nighttime Essentials

• Comfy: light sweater or cardigan
• Formal Layer: Thicker button-down shirt

 

Remember, the nights can get breezy but not always. It’s always better to have layers and not need them and be chilly. If you’re staying in town it will be much warmer than a romantic dinner by the water.

 

 

Cozumel crowds in February

February is a very busy month in Cozumel. It’s the peak of “Snowbird” season, and more importantly, it’s Carnival. I love Carnival, the parades on Melgar Avenue are a nice change of pace and they setup a local fair with rides and games, but that means the town is packed.

During the peak season (Jan – Mar) island excursions fill up fast and there are tons of people so I HiGHLY recommend you book tours and activities MINIMUM 7-days in advance to secure a spot. For perspective each day we turn away between 5 -30 people who walk up and want to try Cozumel Parasailing because they see other people flying and get FOMO.

Or, they thought they would get a better deal paying cash in person but the reality is there are more people then we have flights. We have a limited number of flights each day because of boat traffic (as you can see above) and priority goes to customers who reserve a time online.

I shot this photo and it was crazy but cool looking and I think it shows perfectly how busy it gets here. Smooth vacations don’t just happen, they come from research and planning things out. Well at least you can reserve a tour with us knowing your money will be returned if plans change.

 

If you’re trying to get a taxi or a table at a popular spot, give yourself an extra 30 minutes. If you want a more quiet experience, I usually head to the East side (the “Wild Side”) to places like Chen Rio, or coconuts. You will need a rental car or know how to catch a taxi in Cozumel. There are no crowds, just waves and peace on the east side and the southern tip of Cozumel.

 

Top Cozumel Activities in February

Ok, we got the weather stuff out of the way, now let’s talk about the best activities to do while you’re here. Since it’s the dry season I recommend anything outside and in the sun.

 

ATV Jungle Tour

Cost $75 person

Why now: The jungle isn’t a mud pit right now, and it’s cool enough that you won’t overheat in a helmet.

Personally I loved it because it was adventure and excitement before I spent the day on the beach. It was a 90 minute tour that 8 of us did and was a blast! Everyone on my tour opted for the Cenote experience (which was additional $15) and that was super cool. I did this last month and the cenote water was refreshing after the dusty trails.

We stayed here for some cool pictures and headed back to the beach club where we spent the rest of our day at the beach and drinking margaritas! The chairs and amenities are all included when you book so that was cool.

Note: Jade Cavern charges $15 extra and wasn’t included in our ATV tour. So expect $75 + $15 if you want to go.

 

Punta Sur Ecological Park

Cost: $16 person

My first tip, go early. I suggest trying to get there right when they open at 9:00 AM to beat the cruise ship buses. They come in droves. The view from the lighthouse is the best on the island.

I didn’t pay to climb the Celarain Lighthouse, but you can definitely see the entire coast! But the real magic is spotting the wildlife. You can stop off before you get there as walk out onto a spotting deck to see huge crocodiles in the Columbia Lagoon.

 

Punta Sur was a really cool experience. There isn’t a whole lot to the tower it’s mainly a beach and Eco Park so don’t have super high expectations.

 

Jet Skiing

Do this on a day when the winds are low. Even if you only book a 30 minute jet ski it’s fun to splash around (or let the kids burn energy) on our new seadoos in front of the beach club. If you’re looking for something a little longer or maybe a guided excursion, book a snorkel + jet ski tour. It’s 90-minutes and packs two activities in one.

You get your own jet ski and get to whip around to a secluded spot where everyone gets to pull the jetski up onto the beach, whip our the snorkel gear and play at your own speed. Take pictures, snack and swim for half an hour before heading back for a 20 minute jet ski ride around the island.

If you’re on a international cruise coming to Cozumel or here for a week-long vacation you may be wondering what is the legal drinking age in Cozumel mexico? But what about when your on the cruise ship, or even in the port?

The legal drinking age rules for cruise ship passengers can be confusing and vary depending on location. I will clarify this and give you tips on the the best places to get alcohol in Cozumel.

 

What is the legal drinking age in Cozumel?

The legal drinking age in Cozumel, Mexico, is 18 years old. This is a nationwide law that applies across all Mexican states. So, if you are 18 or older, you are legally able to purchase and consume alcohol on the island doesn’t matter where it’s at beach club, resort, bar night club or cruise you can drink! This is one of the most frequent surprises for visitors from the United States, where the age is 21.

 

Legal Drinking Age On a Cruise ship

This is where it gets confusing. Princess, Disney and Royal Caribbean cruise lines all have different policies regarding the age limit to drink alcohol. The general rule is while sailing on international waters the legal drink age on a cruise ship is 18 years old.

When a ship is within 3 miles of a country it is technically in the countries border and must abide by the countries laws.

Royal Caribbeans officially drinking policy is that no matter where the ship is you must be 21 as quoted below “the minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages on all Royal Caribbean International is 21 no matter where the cruise originated from. You can view their policy here. This means even if you are docked in Cozumel they will not serve you alcohol if you 18.

Cozumel port closures happen more often the cruise lines admit. Most travelers don’t know this until the day of. When wind or weather forces a port closure, all docking in Cozumel shut down and most operators keep your money. Their 24-hour cancellation policy doesn’t care that you found out that morning. I’ve watched this happen to hundreds of passengers who booked through Viator, their cruise line, and local companies.

Cruise Ship Legal Drinking Age Summary

If you are on an international cruise, this is the most important section. You have two sets of rules to follow, and they are different:

• On the Ship: The cruise line’s policy applies (usually 21). You cannot drink on board, even when docked in Cozumel, if you are under their policy age.
• On the Island: Mexican law applies (18). The moment you step off the gangway and onto the pier, you can legally drink if you are 18 or older.

 

It depends on what cruise ships policy. Mexico is notorious for having relaxed laws for drinking alcohol and doesn’t really enforce the laws strictly. If your on vacation they care more about making that all mighty US dollar so they will serve you.

As far as Cozumel goes you will have free rain on alcohol, cigarettes and many over the counter medicines as long as you are 18 years old.

Yes, absolutely. You are 100% legal to drink ONLY in Cozumel. You can purchase alcohol, and visit bars once you are on the island, regardless of your ship’s policy.

What ID should I bring ashore?

Pro-Tip for Cruise Travelers: Many tourists prefer to carry a driver’s license and leave their passport locked safely on the ship. While your license is usually accepted, always have a clear photo of your passport on your phone as a backup, just in case a bar or store insists on it.

Will the ship stop me from boarding if I have alcohol?

The ship is only concerned with alcohol being brought on board for consumption (open). If you purchase a bottle of tequila, they will tag it and hold it until your final disembarkation day. They will not stop you from boarding if you are sober and following their rules.

 

Do I need To Carry a ID to drink?

While the legal age is 18, if you want hassle free fun just take your ID. Now if your staying in a resort it’s very unlikely you will need a ID. Maybe the 1st time, but after that just keep going to the same bartender. The will definitely card you at stores and maybe the bar they are pretty strict. especially if you look under 25.

Always carry a valid, government-issued photo ID. For travelers, this means your passport or a driver’s license. Don’t rely on photocopies, as they may not be accepted in all places.

When your here you absolutely have to experience a super popular place called the Thirsty Cougar Bar. With over 765 verified reviews on Trip Advisor you can’t go wrong. They have great food, are located right on the main strip near the ocean and have good music. What’s really cool is that your sitting right on the main road and get to people watch and take in the culture which is very relaxing.

But, the main reason I went there EVERY NIGHT was for the alcoholic deserts. This things is just delicious with a little buzz. They have lots of alcohol flavor choices but I found this one to be my personal favorite and it only costs $9!

For a taste of authentic local spirits, Destileria Cozumel is a unique stop. This distillery bar offers authentic rum, gin, and local spirit flights, giving you a deeper appreciation for the high-quality liquors produced in the region. It’s a great educational and tasting experience for cocktail enthusiasts.

 

Buccanos

Buccanos is an upscale experience away from the main strip, perfect for those seeking sophisticated drinks. They give a adults only vibe but are completely kid friendly. The law is the same whether you’re asking about the drinking age in Cozumel Mexico or any other major destination in the country. Local police and enforcement tend to focus more on tourists behavior than on age verification (as long as you’re 18+).

The biggest issues tourists run into involve public consumption and driving under the influence, which leads me to the rules everyone needs to know.

 

Where to Buy Alcohol in Cozumel (And When You Can)

When you want to grab a bottle of tequila or a few local beers to enjoy at your accommodation, you have a few options:

Supermarkets

Major stores like Chedraui and Mega are great places to stock up. Prices here are the cheapest your gonna find ANYWHERE. You will also get the biggest selection of alcohol because of their size. I personally prefer Mega over Chedraui but they are gonna be comparable price wise.

Mega carry hard liquor, beer, wine coolers and traditional wine. They have some pretty unique flavors and style of alcohol here too. Not to mention it’s honest a cool experience I cover in my free things to do in Cozumel article which is a great 5 minute read.

 

Small Convience stores

This Oxxo was down the street from my villa. We shopped here many times for ods and ends. They have beer and two wine options and 8 tequila options to choose from. Prices arent as cheap as the supermarket but still super reasonable especially for the local tequila.

 

However, be aware of the Ley Seca (Dry Law) on sales. While bars can serve until late, retail stores have specific hours for alcohol sales, typically closing at 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and sometimes earlier on Sundays (5:00 p.m.). Plan ahead!

I’ve been here for a while, and the best advice I can give any traveler who asks what is the drinking age in Cozumel is to know the law beyond your ID and follow these two very simple rules:

1. No Drinking in Public

This is non-negotiable. It is against the law to walk down the street, sit on a park bench, or hang out in the main square with an open alcoholic beverage. If you buy a beer, keep it sealed until you are at your hotel, a beach club, or a private residence.

2. Never Drink and Drive

We have plenty of affordable taxis available everywhere. The police take impaired driving very seriously. A taxi or Uber (if available) is always worth the cost compared to the legal hassle, fines, or worst-case scenarios. Stay safe and stick to designated drivers or local transport.

Top Free things to do in cozumel

I’m gonna be honest with you, there aren’t many free things to do in the cozumel but there are a some! In this blog I layout the free, fun and inexpensive ways to explore Cozumel on a budget. These recommendations are great for cruise passengers, elderly couples or families.

Cruise vacations can get expensive when your booking any of the 21 things to do in Cozumel mexico trying to create memories at every port call and especially if Cozumel is the last stop in your itinerary. So finding free things to do near the cozumel Cruise port is essential and I have some!

Cozumels cruise ports are friendly and walkable. You will find tons of shops to pick up the common souvenirs and places to get a really good Mexican food. The truth remains the same your limited.

ONLY free ways to explore Cozumel:

• Swimming
• Walking
• Eating

I know the last one isn’t free but you will see what we have to work with soon enough. Don’t give up because right outside your port is stuff to do in addition to this list of 11 things to avoid doing in Cozumel.

As soon as you walk out of the port onto the public street turn left and walk about 2ish miles (or take a $10 taxi) to downtown. That’s where the cool stuff is.

Everything around the port will cost and that’s where they trap you into spending your hard earned money. In case your wondering yes, it is safe to walk around even with the cozumel travel advisory. The immediate area outside “port area” is often considered barely local. So you have to go further for more authentic vibes.

Does Cozumel Have a free beach?

Yes, Cozumel has several free public beaches where you can enjoy the Caribbean Sea without an entrance fee. As of 2026 Playa Chen Rio is the best 100% free beach in Cozumel on the eastern side of the island. On the western side, visitors can swim for free at Playa Casitas Beach.

Playa Palancar has historically been the most famous free beach on the island, known for its wide stretch of white sand and proximity to the Palancar Reef but started charging a entrance fee as of late 2025.

 

Cozumels Free Things To Do

These are my best tips for American travelers. Skip the junk trinkets and try these no cost adventures without constantly pulling out your wallet.

 

Swim at a Public Beach

Cost: Free

Forget the massive, pricey beach clubs. You can experience the clear blue water for free, if you know where to look. Don’t assume all beaches are free because they are not.  Take a dip, read a book or lay down a towel and relax without workers pestering you.

Playa Casitas is the best beach for cruise passengers because it’s about 3 miles from the Cozumel cruise ports and a simple 8 minute taxi ride. $20 will cover up to 4 people. It’s not your traditional because in the sense there isn’t soft white sand, it is pretty rocky but it’s a beach. Here you can find shade, grass and access to beautiful blue water completely free.

Cozumel has miles of coastline that’s controlled by private beach clubs but I recently updated this list of the public beaches in Cozumel that let you swim and relax without a cover charge. Grab your towel and head straight for the water.

Above is a picture of San Francisco beach. But it doesn’t beat my personal favorite which is Playa Martin.Its not ideal  Me and the girlfriend rented scooters and took a trip over there to just get away from the traffic. On the scooter it took us about 15 minutes to get there but the ride was cool. We got to see other parts of the city.

 

 

San Martin Beach has a perfect, relaxed vibe, and the water is exactly that clear, turquoise color you came for. The best part is that you don’t need a day pass pass to enjoy it. It was cloudy the day we went to be sure to choose a sunny day!

Don’t worry about eating because of you get hungry or need to use the bathroom during your beach picnic there is a place to eat just down the road. It’s where I took the picture of the group on scooters below. But if your traveling to San Martin your likely staying in Cozumel for more than a day and I have a great recommendation for you.

 

 

Walking Downtown

Cost: Free

The area around the ferry terminal is technically San Miguel de Cozumel, and it’s where all the action is. Don’t rush past it. Take some time and simply walk around down here. This is roughly 2ish miles from the cruise port and you can walk there. I recommend bringing water if it’s a hot day.

There are private tours that make this a core theme of the tour. Even the Razor tours drive down through downtown.

There is local food and also Americanized places to eat like Burger King and, Buffalo wild Wings. Sometimes they host concerts and events in the middle. When I was here I hung up my hammock and just watched the locals and had my fair share of ice cream from the local gelato shop.

Stroll along El Malecón (the broad waterfront sidewalk), watch the cruise ships come and go, and check out the statues in the main square. This is where you get a real feel for local life once the day-trippers head back to the mainland on their playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip. If you want to do a little shopping this is the place.

It’s can get a little annoying with all of the locals trying to pull you into their shops or sell you something. But a simple “no thank you” usually gets the job done. Downtown (Cozumel Centro) is actually a comfortable distance away from the cruise ports so you will find different kinds of souvenirs here that you won’t find in the port.

 

Mega Grocery Store

Cost: Free

This might sounds strange but hear me out. If the goal is to experience Cozumel you must do this. Each time I stayed in Cozumel at a Airbnb we had to shop for food and it turned into a very enlightening experience. You get to see different varieties of food you would never see. I found it fun seeing variations of food we don’t have here and also one we do!

The way the Mexican culture hands food is pretty interesting. They don’t cover the meat up and eggs air sit on shelves unrefrigerated. As a bonus of you need something this is the cheapest place to pick stuff up. They take cash or credit and if you need to use the ATM this is a great reason to come besides you can save money buying alcohol here too!

Whole your here take the opportunity to get cash from the ATM. As you can see there are multiple banks to choose from bit it doesn’t matter. Just make sure to always DECLINE the conversion rate. It will adopt the banks inflated conversion rate instead of Mexican countries rate.

 

Mercado Municipal Market

Cost: Free

I discovered this local market on accident by wandering further outside of downtown. Similar to the flea market in the way it’s open to the public but very different. It’s located probably 7 blocks behind the Cozumel Centro plaza. Here you can experience where the locals shop and eat.

You can’t see it from this photo but there are 8-10 places to grab local food and it’s open to the public. I didn’t see any tourist here but about 70 locals roamed about shopping for fresh fruit and fish. We had eaten before find this or I would’ve have happily bought food because it smelled great (when I didn’t smell the freshly caught fish).

I tried a pineapple and it’s was the most incredible flavor ever. To this day I refuse to eat pineapples out of the can. I will only buy it fresh. The guy here taught me how to smell the pineapple and know when one is ready to be eaten.

They also have shopping areas for you to pickup different kinds of souvenirs (different from the common junk trinkets near the port). Unique style stuff. I forgot what I bought but I was happy. So try shopping here and explore.

 

Explore Local Street Food

Cost: Free

Okay, this one is almost free. You get the experience for free, but it will be hard not to buy something! This kinda of food you want to eat FRESH so make sure you didn’t eat anything and don’t try to save it for later. Street vendors don’t accept card so bring cash.

Wander away from the main tourist streets and find where the locals eat. The smells of fresh cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork) and grilling corn on the cob are incredible. Stop, watch them make the tacos, soak up the atmosphere, and if you do decide to spend a dollar or two, you’ll get the best, most authentic meal of your trip.

 

Snorkel From Shore

Cost: Free

If your looking to peak under the water and see the bright fishes you can do that WITHOUT paying. They are everywhere, just bring your own gear. If you didn’t bring it you can always buy some at the local grocery store. Did you know some of the best coral formations are right off the public shorelines?

 

If you bring your own mask and fins, and you can jump right in. I recommend water shoes because most of the beaches are rocky. The water visibility in Cozumel is insane, even near the beach. Pro Tip: For spots that offer the best free snorkeling, you’ll want to check out the more south-facing public beaches Playa Palancar. These are the best you’ll get.

The reefs start closer to shore in certain areas. I share the details for the best beach to snorkel for free in cozumel as a good opportunity for you to see the marine life.

 

Fun & Cheap Things to Do in Cozumel (Under $20)

Visit Sunset Bar

Price: Cheap

If your looking for a experience this place is a popular spot between Puerta Maya cruise port and downtown. They are well known for the good vibes and happy hour between 1-3pm and 7-8pm. It’s a beachfront bar & Grill that also has access point you can use to jump into the ocean. There is a shaded upper and lower portion where you can enjoy good food peacefully. It doesn’t get crazy busy and the staff aren’t pushy.

They have a beach area you can use if you bring your own snorkel gear. It is rocky you you must bring/ buy water shoes but that’s why I suggested Megas grocery store above! Sunset is know for good vibes and food.

 

Explore The Island on a Scooter

Price: $25 $19 (w/discount)

This is my personal favorite way to explore the island. Well anywhere I go to be honest. Scooters are cheap, easy to park, give you a sense of freedom instead of being cooped up in a car. You can rent a scooter for a full day (24 hours) $25.

You will see tons of Cozumel travel blogs warning you not to rent a scooter and I completely disagree. It’s probably top 3 ways to see cozumel. I have rented from a wonderful and honest guy named Carlos everytime I visit. These mopeds are well taken care of and newer. Here we are below on my last trip.

See The Crocodiles at Punta Sur

Price: $ 16

While the full admission to Punta Sur Ecological Park is $16, you can often find local tour operators that offer a specific stop-off to see the alligator viewing area for a very low cost, or even just view them along the main highway if you know where to look. It’s a quick, exciting glimpse into the island’s wild side.

 

Visit the Cozumel Museum

Price: $11

If you hit a rainy patch or just need a break from the sun, the local museum is a fantastic, cheap escape. We did it, it was quite, barely anyone there. It would be cool for a family but not so much for us.

The entrance fee is minimal, and you get a great overview of the island’s history, Mayan heritage, and marine life. It’s a great way to deepen your appreciation for Cozumel.
