Is a Day Trip To Cozumel Worth it?

Hands down, absolutely a day trip from playa del carmen to Cozumel is worth it! Look,  I understand the hesitation. You’re on a precious, limited vacation, and sacrificing a whole day for travel feels like a huge risk. But the money you will save just from eating in Cozumel vs Playa justifies the day trip.

Playa is very… developed. Also, busier and more expensive! I paid $12 for a bottled water! (more on this crap later) So we planned a day trip to Cozumel which was easier than expected. I asked you this one question. Can you name a better way to get unforgettable memories than traveling like a local.

 

7 Reasons To Take A Day Trip

I firmly believe making the Cozumel day trip from Playa del Carmen is the best decision you can make of your staying in Playa. They are two very different world existing so close to each other. Here is why I think this budget-friendly adventure is absolutely worth your time:

• Cost: Most things are cheaper in Cozumel vs playa.
• Beach Clubs: The beach clubs are simply better.
• Food: The food is more authentic.
• Best of Both Worlds: staying in Playa Del Carmen you get the hustle and bustle. They have great night clubs. Cozumel is a beach vibe all the way.
• MORE excursions: Most of the excursions you will see advertising are either in Cozumel or Telum. For example our Jade Cavern ATV jungle tour and Parasailing doesn’t happen in Playa only Cozumel.
• The Travel Time is Minimal: The biggest myth is that the travel time is too long. It’s not! The ferry is fast (just 45 minutes), meaning you can easily fit 8–10 hours of incredible sightseeing and best excursions onto the island without needing to rush.
• The Experience is Unique: Cozumel is famous worldwide for a reason—it’s home to the second largest barrier reef in the world. If you want to experience world-class snorkeling or Parasailing tours. A day trip to Cozumel is your one-day passport to that adventure.

How To Get Cozumel From Playa

There are ONLY two ferry going between Cozumel and playa del carmen, trust me this process is easier than you might think. The ride over is a peaceful 40-45 min ride. Most people just show up and take whatever boat is leaving next. You can buy one way or round-trip tickets. 

You can catch the Ferry at the Playa del Carmen Ferry Terminal. Ultramar’s ferries are bright yellow and blue, modern and sleek, with comfortable seating and frequent departures.

Alternately, Winjet’s brilliant orange and blue fleet offers comfortable seating and regularly scheduled departures. Both ferries are winners.

 

How Long Does The Ferry Take From Playa to Cozumel

Travel Time: 45 minutes 

Run Times: 7am – 10pm

The ferry ride from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel takes approximately 40 to 45 minutes on the high-speed passenger ferries.

This is the standard crossing time for the major ferry operators (Ultramar, Winjet) passenger ferry companies run from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on the hour between the two destinations alternating schedules throughout the day.

While the trip across the channel is short, I recommend you get there early to be sure you don’t miss it. Arrive at the Maritime Terminal in Playa del Carmen at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time for ticketing and boarding.

 

How Much Is The Ferry From Playa To Cozumel

As of today one-way ferry tickets from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel costs  $17 USD for adults and $12 USD for children. There is no price difference between adults and kids. If you book on bookaway, if you use the Ultramar official site there is a ticket price difference.

While a round trip is approximately $35 USD for adults. Prices can vary depending on the company and whether you buy a one-way or round-trip ticket. But as of today December 5th, 2025 that price is $17 when booking shuttle on Bookaway.

All of the ferry companies have kiosk near the ferry pier. I highly recommend just getting a one-way ticket and then buy a ticket when you are ready to come back. So your not waiting for a ferry because you already bought a return ticket or trying to catch a specific ferry.

• Premium Class : $20 USD (364 peso)
• Round trip adult: $35 USD 
• One-way child (ages 5–11): $12 USD

Where To Get Ferry Tickets

You can buy high speed passenger ferry tickets from playa del Carmen to cozumel in three different ways. Each ferry operator has their own self service kiosk at the piers that allows you to buy your ferry ticket. Also you have two additional ways to buy your ticket for your playa del Carmen to cozumel day trip:

You should remember that the standard round-trip ticket for your day trip to Cozumel from playa del Carmen often assigns an exact return time when purchasing. You might run across a Cozumel excursion near the end of your day, and the freedom to take a later ferry might be worth the difference in the cost. I always buy two one-way tickets.

Should You Bring Your Car

I often hear travelers ask about bringing their rental car over. Maybe you got a good deal on a rental from Cancun and are staying on Cozumel. While it is certainly possible to save time by having your own car on the island, I generally advise against it for a single playa del Carmen to cozumel mexico day trip.

The car ferry takes about the same time as the passenger ferry (45 minutes) but departs from the Calica Mexico Cruise Port, which is about three miles south of the city, requiring extra travel time on the mainland.

This option is mostly for long-term visitors, those hauling large gear, or if you have a huge group. However here is a great guide I found for those of you taking a car from playa to Cozumel.

• Operators: Transcaribe and UltraCarga operate the boats.
• The Caveat: Pricing for both cars and passengers is significantly higher than the passenger ferry, and they have very limited daily departures. You must book this in advance.

I’m going to be completely honest, I feel like I would be cheating you to recommend the popular places near downtown that you see on EVERY other blog. I hate getting over charged for sub par food like you will find at over 50% of the beach clubs.

How To Get Around On a Day Trip

Don’t worry, once you step off the ferry, getting around the island is the easiest part of the trip! You will see taxes lined up to your left. Get in line they are first come first serve.

• Taxis: The simplest option. Find them right outside the terminal for a direct ride to any beach or excursion.
• Scooters: My personal favorite for fun! Rent one near the ferry terminal to cruise the coastal road at your own pace.
• Dune Buggy Rentals:Conveniently located but generally not necessary unless you plan to drive the entire island loop.
• Walking: The main town of San Miguel is very walkable—perfect for a quick look around the pier area.

When we took our day trip it started raining. With the beach being cancelled we decided to checkout San Gervasio Park, the oldest excavated Mayan ruin on the island. It was really cool to see how they used to live and learn about the culture of all the Mayans and how they disappeared .

Visit A Cenote

 I have been to every cenote in cozumel, also ones in the Dominican Republic. You will regret not seeing it with your own eyes. A cenote is an underground chamber that becomes accessible when the ceiling collapses. As a result, the cenote contains collected rainwater and spring water, stalactites and stalagmites, and lush plant life growing above.

What if you don’t want all the amenities (pool, chairs, food, toys) and just want to put out a towel and read peacefully? Imagine someone or other blogs say “hey this beach in Cozumel is free”  but when you get there they ask for $20 entrance fee. You feel like a idiot and now your upset. Well not with my blog. My info is up-to-date and I also talk about a hidden gem free beach NOBODY talks about. But first.

The water in Cozumel has an irresistible factor to it and 3 years ago I almost died swimming near Secrets Aurora All Inclusive Resort. I had no idea how a simple swim could turn so dangerous so fast. Keep reading to hear my story and learn my mistakes.

There are beaches that are free to the public in cozumel, you just have to know how to get to them. Also, I tell you the best beaches for snorkeling (yes free if you have equipment). The warm blue colors and clarity literally call you to its shores (especially the free ones). But, please I beg you to consider how dangerous it can be if you don’t educate yourself, my story is highlighted in blue for easy reading.

 

Public Beaches In Cozumel

These beaches have free public access, and offer safe swimming conditions when the water is calm. They’re ideal for travelers who want a beautiful beach day without paying for a beach club access.

Playa Palancar

Cost: Free *No longer Free*

This beach is located on the southern most west side of the island furthest away from the cruise port. They are a beach club yes, but they are one of the few no entrance fee beach clubs in Cozumel. Also among the most popular public beaches with some of the calmest water on the west side. Recent research shows that Palancar beach club changed their policy and now require visitors to spend at least 200 pesos ($16 usd) and the access is free.

You can just hop a taxi and head down. With a massive rock free swimming area palancar beach is great for swimming, snorkeling, relaxing, and escaping crowds while still having optional paid amenities nearby if you change your mind

Playa San Francisco

Cost: Free w/ $20 food purchase

Although its surrounded by beach clubs, the shoreline itself is public. The water here is typically very calm and shallow, making it perfect for swimming and families.

Playa San Martín

• Cost: Free

This is a great place for a peaceful break away. Known as the 7-miles of virgin beach it’s A large open public beach on the east side. Waves can be stronger here, so check conditions — but on calmer days, it’s a wide, gorgeous place to swim with lots of space. Playa Chen Río

Cost: Free

I don’t recommend this beach for cruise passengers because it would take up to much of your time for travel. This beach is great for people taking a day trip from playa del Carmen to Cozumel. The location and transportation needed makes it ideal for people with their own vehicle or multi- day vacations in cozumel.

It’s busy and popular. Located on the west side and known for its rock-protected natural pools that break the waves and create safe swimming pockets. One of the best options for a public beach on the east side with added protection.

Important Beach Tips

There a couple things you should consider before choosing your beach here they are

• Sandy Beaches are sparse – Most of the northern island is rocky. More than 50% of the beaches in this list have rocks.
• West vs East – Beaches on the west are calm, closer to the ports and offer more amenities. It’s also where 90% of beach clubs are. The east side is furthest from cozumel’s cruise ports, usually windy and is less developed. Rip tides are a big danger learn more about them below.
• 100% Free Beaches – There are only two truly free beaches the rest are creative in how you access them.

 

Can You Just Go To A Beach In Cozumel?

Yes, you can easily go to a beach in Cozumel, as all beaches in Mexico are technically public property. But there’s a catch to it, keep reading. The ease of access and use of amenities varies significantly.

Most of the prime swimming areas on the calm, West Side are bordered by private Beach Clubs and resorts. I have a list of beach clubs in cozumel that is a super useful resource when deciding where to spend the day. Remember, when you book any of our Cozumel excursions you get free access to all of our amenities which aren’t available at public access beaches

 

Best Public Beach In Cozumel

The best Public beach for swimming in Cozumel is Chen Rio (about a half km south of Coconut’s.) The public access is right before El Pescador.

This public swimming area has a small tidal pool and a nice beach that makes it safe for families. This is the spot for a completely free and natural experience on the island’s.

Travel details to Chen Rio from cruise port

• Distance: Approximately 10 to 12 miles (16 to 19 km) from the main cruise ports (Puerta Maya or International Pier).
• Travel Time: The drive typically takes about 25 minutes one-way, as it requires crossing the island
• Cost: For a taxi ride from the cruise port to Chen Rio you can expect to pay $30-$35

Keep in mind majority of cozumel’s shoreline is Rock so public swimming places are few and far between. Be aware that the East Side is known for large waves and strong currents, which is largely my reason for writing this blog as a part of my is Cozumel safe for tourists series. Where To Eat Near Chen Rio

If you choose Chen Rio to swim from our list of free access beaches in Cozumel, I HIGHLY suggest you don’t pass up the chance to experience Coconuts Bar & Grill. It’s Just down the road like 1 mile.

They have lots of animals like a small zoo, and you get the chance to eat on a cliff overlooking the ocean! This is an adult bar families are ok eating there but be cautious most customers are adults and that’s what the staff are used to dealing with.

 

With over 2k Google reviews and a 4.5 star rating is a must see place. It’s super cool even just walking up to the bar. It’s like your favorite small bar back home with tons of history and memories.

 

Cozumel Beaches Map

Before we dive into the details of my story I wanted to provide a quick visual aid for finding cozumels beaches. I have to apologize in advance for the crudeness of this map! It’s a quick generated image  to help you get your bearings on the island. While it may not be a professional-grade nautical chart, it should give you a good idea of where everything is located relative to each other.

Think of it as your trusty (if slightly messy) trail map—functional enough to keep you pointed toward the nearest stretch of white sand and turquoise water!

 

Beaches Near Cozumel Cruise Port

There are only two beaches within walking distance from Cozumel cruise ports. These don’t require you to take a taxi or rent a care. I list three other beaches slightly further that have free beach access too.

 

• Caletita Beach: The absolute closest beach, generally walkable (approx. 0.1 miles). Best for a quick dip or short visit, but note it is rocky and has limited services.

• El Cid La Ceiba Hotel: Located right by the International Cruise Terminal (0.1 – 0.5 miles, walkable). Offers the quickest access to calm water and lounge chairs if you secure a day pass.

• Money Bar Beach Club: A very short taxi ride (1 – 1.5 miles, 5 minutes) from the main piers. An excellent, convenient option known for its great snorkeling right off the shore, with full-service food and drinks.

While you can walk along the sand, you can NOT use chairs, umbrellas, restrooms, or resort facilities. Truly free, public access beaches with open parking and no fees are available, especially on the rougher East Coast, but they typically have fewer amenities and no lifeguards.

 

What is The Nicest Beach In Cozumel

The “nicest” beach in Cozumel is Playa Palancar.  Remember, palancar is no longer free, but it is still a top choice for a large beach with a relaxing atmosphere. It’s busy but less crowded than other beaches. While Paradise Beach is ideal for those seeking amenities like water sports, pools, and food service. For snorkeling, both Playa Corona and the accessible reef at Playa Palancar are excellent options.

Best Beach For Snorkeling In Cozumel

The best beach for snorkeling in Cozumel is Money Bar Beach. This is the top public swimming area chosen for frequent snorkelers and is also a free public access beach. Don’t get it mixed up with the beach club entrance. Specifically the small sandy area to the right of the beach club access.

• Dzul-Ha a.k.a “Money Bar This is one of the best shore-access snorkeling spots on the island. It has a reef close to shore, easy water entry, shallow water, and abundant marine life even without a boat.

Swimming in the waters of Cozumel Mexico is generally considered safe if you avoid the foolish mistakes I made in 2022. Now is probably to tell you about our article with tips on what not to do in Cozumel mexico. I have to warn you, in my many trips to the island, I’ve encountered some things that I think you should know about before you set off.

Tips For Safe Swimming

As common sense as the following things seem it never hurts for a little reminder. I found myself in a bad situation one time swimming just off the shore while staying at Secrets Aura Cozumel a adults only all-inclusive resort. In that moment I literally said out loud “I’m not dying out here” and rolled onto my back to catch my breath. Below is a photo of me on that day that leads me to my first tip.

1. Only Swim in Designated Areas

If I tooky own advice instead of being cool and overly confident I could have avoided this close cal all together. I swam in a area where there were no life guardes because the beach area was a little rocky. Choose beaches with designated swimming zones. They are designated For a reason.

2. Use the Buddy System

Never swim alone, While swimming off the shore my wife was with me grant it she was there and seen me but she eventually realized the REAL trouble in was in. When I found myself being pulled further and further from shore she could tell, I saw her run over to the lifeguard. Having someone who pays attention to you is a great way to increase safety. They can help or get help likely faster than a lifeguard would see you.

3. Avoid Alcohol & Swimming

This was my 1st mistake, I was not drug and feeling good so I decided to swim out deeper. Alcohol impairs judgment, reduces muscular function. Slows your reaction time and can makes you cramp. It dehydrates you and reduces your performance. Enjoy and have fun, but remember to use good judgment. Do NOT drink alcohol and swim in the ocean.

4. Wear Protective Footwear

It Looks cheesy when you see others wearing them. But, there are rocks, and sharp things underwater you may not see. While at the resort on the north side of the pier, there are small rocks and a 15 ft area of stone underwater.

 

My personal experience

During my near death experience I had to many alcoholic beverages and felt overly confident. I decided to swim out waist high and then wanted to go deeper. Now I’m a very strong swimmer, I’m usually the person who wins races in the pool and have been doing it for over 20 years. So I felt perfectly comfortable b swimming out deep enough where I couldn’t touch.

Just the raw energy of the ocean is impressive that’s why amusement parks install wave pools for visitors to enjoy. So I went deeper and before you knew it shore looked far away.

I was enjoying myself for about 4-5 minutes before I realized the beach was further away that I would prefer. My heart was pumping from all the swimming and I wanted a break so I did the breast stroke back to the beach but it only got further as further away…

Swimming is possible but not recommended. The winds typically come in the from east which causes intense strong waves that crash into land.

Family Safe Beaches in Cozumel

The best place for families to swim in cozumel is still beach clubs also. This is safe, they have lots of things to keep the kids busy and also mom and dad can relax. The sheer number of people in the water making noise, and moving around will naturally deter any animals that could potentially be harmful besides tiny fish. Remember, snorkeling tours, the dolphin experience, and other water activities are more than safe. For strictly swimming I recommend a public beach or beach club.

Extra precautions are necessary when swimming with family, especially children. Ensure children are supervised and understand water safety. Use appropriate flotation devices for added safety.

As the beach was getting further and further away I started to panic slightly but I’m more confident because to this point I’ve never encountered a swimming challenge I couldn’t overcome. At this point I realized I was being pulled away from shore by a rip current. So what did I do? I tried a couple things.

First I swam like hell back towards shore pushing and digging my hands in the the water as hard and fast as I could. I would pump hard for 15 seconds, bring my head up out of the water and look and I would be any closer. I did this 4x and accepted the fact it wasn’t working. So I tried a different tactic.

I would time the waves crashing and let them push me back to shore. So I tried around and face the waves coming in and kicked like hell to get my body to the surface of the wave and that worked but not as good as I hoped. Then I realized it was out so deep that the waves weren’t forming nearly as strong anymore. This all happened within a matter of 60 seconds I was pulled back 80 feet further from shore.

It was at this point I seen the lifeguard coming over near my fiance and looking at me. I waved but I need both hands to tread water so I only did that twice before I was forced to turn onto my back and float. When I looked the lifeguard was coming into the water..

Do Public Beaches Have Lifeguards

The only beach in Cozumel that I’ve seen a lifeguard at are those beaches near Beach Clubs and at Chen Rio. Public beaches and other non popular places are not manned by lifeguards. The beaches in Cozumel have flags. These flags are current warnings and indications of the water outside of Cozumels hurricane season. They will let you know if it’s safe to swim in. The public beaches don’t have lifeguards, but some of the private beaches do.

How I Almost Died In Cozumel

I was exhausted, my heart was pounding out of my chest andy lungs were burning. Nobody tells you just how salty the water is and how bad it burns your eyes after continuous exposure. After a 30 second rest I say out loud (but to myself) “I’m not dying out here” and I analyze the situation.

I have been trying to swim towards shore where there are no waves, I see the big waves that can push me back to shore and 40 feet to my left. So I swim parallel to the shore toward the big waves and attempt the previous strategy of using the waves to push me to shore.

It was insane how fast it happened… It’s like I found a sweet spot of water trying to save me. I alternated between floating on my back, timing the big waves breaking and swimming as hard as I could and after 3 try of the same strategy I’m a different location I could finally touch the sand! At least until the waves receeded. Within 2 minutes I was back to a depth I could touch (I’m 6’5″) and I was rushing to get out of the water. I just wanted to be free of this monster that would have taken my life if I had panicked and forgot to float.

So what was it that almost killed me? I didn’t learn until 5 days later it was a naturally occuring Rip Tide that can happen anywhere there are waves. This experience is the reason I wrote this blog. Just a week ago a 7 year old girl died after being caught in a rip tide and her father couldn’t save her somewhere in America. Rip Currents: A Real Swimming Danger

To spot a rip current, look for differences in water color, waves, and movement. Rip currents often appear as a channel of churning, choppy water, an area having a notable difference in water color, a line of foam, seaweed, or debris moving steadily seaward, or a break in the incoming wave pattern.

How to Spot a Rip Tide

A rip current is a strong, localized, and rather narrow current of water moving away from shore. Found near beaches, it moves directly away from the shore, cutting through the lines of breaking waves. Rip currents typically form in low spots or breaks in sandbars, and also near structures such as jetties and piers.

Avoid a Rip Tide

To avoid a rip tide, always swim at lifeguard-patrolled beaches and heed their warnings. Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties, as rip currents often form near these structures. If you’re unsure about water conditions, ask a lifeguard for advice, and always stay vigilant while swimming.

How To Escape A Rip Tide

If caught in a rip current, it’s crucial to remain calm and conserve energy. Don’t fight the current by trying to swim directly back to shore. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline until you’re out of the current’s grip.

Once free, angle yourself towards the beach and swim back. If you can’t break free, float or tread water and signal for help by waving your arms and shouting. Remember, rip currents are powerful but typically narrow; escaping is often a matter of swimming sideways, not directly against the current’s force.

What Not To Do (Golden Rule)

The biggest thing to avoid in Cozumel Mexico is anyone trying to sell you something. As a tourist you should not buy anything from locals trying to “sell” you. If your interested, buy it when your coming back or leaving. Punta Lagosta is the worst From the very second you walk off the cruise ship or pass through airport customs and you will be solicited. Seriously just say NO, but more on this below.

11 Things To Avoid in Cozumel

1. The Tap Water

This one is a bit of a cliche, but for good reason. The tap water in Cozumel is simply not safe for drinking. You can brush your teeth with it just don’t swallow the water.– you’ll likely see even many locals using bottled water for their needs (including for preparing food in restaurants). The water contains harmful bacteria and parasites that can make you sick. Even if you’re lucky enough not to get sick, it’s simply not worth risking it. Drink only bottled water and read Cozumel foods that can make you sick so you know what to avoid. It’s not that expensive and you can find it at most supermarkets, convenience stores, and restaurants.

2. Hurricane Season

Cozumel is located in the Caribbean, which puts it in the path of hurricanes. Hurricane season runs from June to November, with the peak months being August, September, and October. If you’re planning a trip to Cozumel during this time, be sure to keep an eye on the weather and stay updated on any hurricanes that may be approaching (or better yet, plan a trip outside of this window).

Listen to the advice of local authorities if the weather turns foul. But you can save some real money if you do choose to travel during this time!

3. Renting A Scooter

Avoid Renting a scooter in Cozumel if your not experienced and confident. Renting a scooter might seem like a fun and exciting way to explore Cozumel, and personally, I love it! But, it can be dangerous, especially if you’re not used to driving in unfamiliar territory, riding on 2 wheels, and don’t have the confidence.

The roads in Cozumel, though they follow the typical American traffic patterns of driving on the )right-hand side), can be narrow and congested. This alone makes driving a scooter more challenging.

 

Add to that the fact that cozumel has a high number of road accidents (many of which involve tourists – especially intoxicated ones – on scooters), and it’s best to leave the driving to the pros. 5. Forgetting to Ask For Bill

Unlike in some countries, waiters in Cozumel won’t bring the bill to your table unless you ask for it. It’s not a matter of forgetfulness, but one of respect – servers want to make sure you’ve had time to savor your meal. So, if you’re ready to pay, catch the waiter’s attention and say, “la cuenta, por favor.” Don’t forget that tipping is also a crucial part of the service industry in Cozumel. As a general rule, it’s customary to tip between 10 to 20 percent of the total bill.

6. Skipping The Sunscreen

Ok, so you almost scrolled past this section… Believe me when I say the rays on the Cozumel side of the sun are hotter… haha not really but seriously. Who wants to be on vacation or worse, go back home and be sore, pealing, or as red as a marichino cherry.

Sunscreen is a must when visiting any tropical destination – you probably already know that. But not all sunscreens are created equal. Many of the generic sunscreens that you find in drugstores can be harmful to the reefs and marine life in the area. The chemicals in these sunscreens can damage the ecosystem and contribute to coral bleaching. Always use reef-friendly sunscreens that are mineral-based. These sunscreens don’t contain harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate, making them much safer for the environment. They’ll still provide all the protection you need against the harsh rays.

7. Taxi Overcharges

We already told you to skip the scooter – so taking a taxi is the next best option. However, you need to be aware of taxi overcharges. You won’t hear this very often, but Cozumel is infamous for drivers who take advantage of tourists and overcharge for rides. To avoid this, always confirm the price before getting into the taxi. You can also ask for a receipt to make sure you’re getting the proper fare.

8. Don’t Buy The Timeshare

Here’s another tip you won’t hear very often – skip the timeshare. Largely they end up being a waste of precious time for a free excursion. Time is money, avoid the headache.
Cozumel is known for its many beautiful resorts, and while timeshares might seem like a good investment at first, they can lead to unexpected expenses and obligations in the future. Save yourself the trouble and avoid the timeshare presentations entirely.

9. Fake Tour Guides

Unfortunately, there are some fake tour guides in the area who may try to take advantage of unsuspecting travelers. Always book your tours through reputable companies and do your research before signing up for any excursions. Make sure that your guide has the necessary certifications and licenses, and ask for references or reviews from previous clients. 10. Drugs

This should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway – drugs are illegal in Mexico (drug possession and drug trafficking are held equal in the eyes of the law and can lead to up to 25 years in prison). 11. Don’t Swim On Red

The public beaches in Cozumel are absolutely beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. It’s important to pay attention to the beach warning flags and signage. If a red flag is out, it means that the water is too rough for swimming and can be dangerous. The currents in the area can be strong, so it’s important to listen to the warnings and stay out of the water until it is safe to do so – yes, even if you consider yourself an excellent swimmer!

Are There Any Places to Avoid in Cozumel?

One of the first places we would recommend avoiding is the neighborhood of San Miguel. Although it’s the island’s largest town and has plenty of shops and restaurants, it can also be overcrowded and too touristy. Instead, we suggest heading to the southern part of the island, where you’ll find more secluded beaches and a peaceful atmosphere. 

Another area to avoid is the cruise ship terminal, especially when several ships are docking at the same time. It can get extremely crowded, and prices for food and souvenirs are often higher here. If you want to fully enjoy your time in Cozumel, consider exploring some of the lesser-known spots that offer breathtaking natural beauty and fewer crowds.

Other than that, Cozumel is a safe city with very few “off-limits” areas for tourists. You’ll want to be mindful of your surroundings and your belongings if you’re visiting the downtown area after dark and any busy beachfront areas.

Is Cozumel the safe haven it’s portrayed to be, or is there a darker side to the beautiful island? How safe are the thousands of people who visit each year? That’s the core question I will answer. But first, let me tell you why I take the safety of your vacation personally.

I have been to Cozumel 17 times and have done every type of activity, including jet skiing, snorkeling, parasailing, and ATV jungle tours. I’ve been burned like a lobster, and yes, I literally almost drowned in these waters—a mistake I discuss later. I take personal pride in sharing my full Cozumel experience, which is why I partnered with Jet Ski Cozumel as an American tourist advisor.

My goal is to use my personal safety lessons (and near death experience) to ensure that when you book your own adventure, you are choosing the most informed, safe and trustworthy tour provider. Now let’s talk Cozumel safety!

Is Cozumel Mexico Dangerous

No, Cozumel is not dangerous but there are a few things you should be mindful about including our 2025 list of what not to do in Cozumel Let’s take a closer look at the safety myths and realities of safety in Cozumel, Mexico. The but short answer, Cozumel is safe to visit. As we enter the start of 2026 nothing has changed in regards to safety since last year.

Cozumel Safety Overview

Let me help you shed you worries and embrace this beautiful island. On Nov 15th, 2023, the Cozumel Crime Index was at a low 34.54, according to Numbeo, a reputable site that tracks crime statistics and the cost of living worldwide. As of today November 23, 2025 the crime index had dropped to 34.22. So, yes Cozumel is safe for tourist right now in 2025.

When your in Cozumel, it quickly becomes clear why it stands out as a beacon of safety, not only for locals but also for the 150,000 tourists it warmly welcomes each week. Yes, you should exercise caution when traveling abroad but nothing more than any other place. With a comfortably low violent crime rate, (significantly lower than many other (popular vacation destinations), and a strong police presence, it sets a gold standard for security.

Is it safe to visit in 2025?

Yes, Cozumel is very safe in 2025, not just for families but also for solo travelers. During my trip, I met a young lady (about 32 years old) who was traveling alone and stayed in Cozumel for 5 days. She met 4 guy friends on the island and they ended up doing excursions together and other activities!

It’s always more comforting when your able to get first hand knowledge from someone like me, who’s been to the places you want to visit, especially in Mexico.

But the fact is Cozumel is definitely on the safer side of all the places to visit in Mexico as of right now because of the low crime rate. 

Is It Safe To Drink The Water in Cozumel

No, tourists should not drink the water directly from the tap in Cozumel. While the island’s water supply is often treated, contamination can occur in the distribution pipes or in the holding tanks of individual buildings.

1. For this reason, the safest practice is to always drink bottled water or purified water, which is widely available and used by locals and tourists alike. Hotels and established restaurants use purified water to make ice, and it is safe to use tap water for showering and general washing, but use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth.

Crime in Cozumel

Crime in Cozumel may be your biggest concern, but it’s relatively low compared to other tourist destinations in Mexico. You can see the proof above in the image, crime has actually fallen on the island since 2023. The local authorities are vigilant, and there’s a visible police and military presence, ensuring safety and detering any who may think it’s just a sleep island.

Diving deeper into the stats for 2025, only 7 homicides were reported in Cozumel’s municipality, mostly isolated acts of violence far removed from the frequented tourist spots on the island. That’s a drop of 14 in less than 2 years! The rate of other violent crimes echoes this trend – notably low.

But, just like anywhere else in the world basic precautions, like keeping an eye on your valuables, are still wise, rest assured. In this pristine paradise it is unlikely you will encounter significant danger.

Cozumel is more than just a postcard-perfect tropical haven; it’s a living community, and like any other place, it grapples with its share of challenges. However, in terms of safety, Cozumel not only meets Mexican standards but also aligns with the expectations of discerning international visitors.

While basic precautions, like keeping an eye on your valuables, are still wise, rest assured that your sojourn in this pristine paradise is unlikely to encounter significant danger.

Is Cozumel safer Than Cancun

Yes, Cozumel is widely considered a safer destination for tourists than Cancun. Cozumel is a smaller island community that relies heavily on tourism, leading to a much lower overall crime rate, especially violent crime. Cozumel has more of a relaxed, dive focused and family-oriented environment. Cancun has an extensive party scene that can lead to routier behavior and more security incidents. Still, stick to well-trafficked areas and follow common-sense travel precautions.

The Common Crimes In Cozumel

Since my initial creation of this article back in 2023 the common crimes haven’t changed. They have reduced a long with the overall crime rating but nothing significant enough to report.

Theft from parked cars: Avoid leaving valuables in whatever  you decide to drive around the island

Credit Card Scams: This is one not many people know about. Vendors are able to change the peso – USD conversion rate and set it at whatever they choose. Ask “What is your conversion rate?” before using your card.

Purse Snatching: Young youth here still purse snatch just as they do in other countries. Carry the minimum when walking about.

Theft: Theft can happen in any part of the world keep your valuables in a safe place.

Is It Safe To Eat In Cozumel?

Yes, eating local cuisine and drinking prepared drinks (including cocktails) is safe in Cozumel. When it comes to eating and drinking in Cozumel,  the island has a plethora of options ranging from high-end restaurants to local street food and of course a seemingly unlimited supply of tequila.

They store and prepare food largely differently than in developed countries such as the US. The hygiene standards are above average but not stellar if you ask me. I still highly recommend you drink bottled or purified water.

Be careful not to indulge heavily in things you don’t already typically eat at home. To Avoid getting sick make sure to wash your hands often, and be mindful of what you eat and drink.

Weather Safety

Cozumel Hurricane season is from  June – October

So we covered crime, now you want to know if Cozumel Mexico safe from natural disasters. Yes, the weather is traditionally safe in Cozumel. The only natural disaster that applies to Cozumel is a hurricane. The last hurricane to hit Cozumel was Hurricane Wilma in 2005. It was the most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Atlantic basin according to highly trusted Wikipedia. The local authorities are well-prepared to handle these situations that come up with early detection, and procedures for evacuating visitors from the island. 

Honestly, when I booked my first trip to Cozumel in 2019, my 1st concern (after I booked my ticket) was “Uh-oh, when is Cozumel’s Hurricane Season?” So I frantically searched Google and found out Cozumel’s Hurricane Season is from June to October. The National Weather Service has published a comprehensive list to prepare for a hurricane. A good resource for tracking weather is Accuweather.

 The last one to hit the island was in 2005, yes 18 years ago! So don’t worry the chances are very low you will be greeting a hurricane anytime soon.

Areas to Avoid in Cozumel

This ones is easy, I did some digging and there are no dangerous areas Cozumel that you need to stay away from. Keep in mind the crime that happens in Cozumel is typically where there are high traffic areas (near the ferry/downtown). Just be aware of your surroundings and you will be fine.

Though Cozumel is largely safe, staying in well-traveled and lit areas is good practice anywhere you go on vacation and should be no exception when visiting Cozumel. There aren’t any areas or places in Cozumel I would say you should avoid as a tourist.

Mexico Travel Advisory

Cozumel is safe for Americans in 2025. The U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Mexico back in 2023 but is has since been lifted. This means that travelers should be aware of the risks and take precautions to protect themselves. That advisory applied to all of Mexico, including Cozumel.

While Cozumel is generally considered to be a safe destination for tourists, it is important to be aware of the potential for crime, such as petty theft and pickpocketing. Here are some tips to help you stay safe:

• Stay in tourist areas and avoid walking alone at night.
• Be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings.
• Don’t carry large amounts of cash or valuables.
• Be careful about accepting drinks from strangers.
• Be aware of potential scams, such as people offering to help you with your luggage or giving you fake directions.

You will notice all of these tips are ones that people should exercise when traveling anywhere new. They are simple precautions directly from the U.S. Dep of State.

If you are planning a trip to Cozumel, it is a good idea to register with the U.S. State “STEP” Program. How to enroll in the Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. This will allow the U.S. government to contact you in the event of an emergency.

Overall, Cozumel is a beautiful and welcoming place to visit. By taking some simple precautions, you can help ensure that your trip is safe and enjoyable.

Local Safety Measures

One of the key safety measures in place by Cozumels local authorities is no drinking in public. In order to keep travelers safe and in check the police do not allow open intoxicants out on the street.

Best Way To Get Around Cozumel

The safest and most recommended transportation option for tourists in Cozumel is licensed taxis or private shuttle service. Taxies are the safest way to get around. Key Recommendation: Taxis are regulated, convenient, and the safest choice for short trips and transfers from the airport or cruise port. 

Alternative Safe Option: Renting a car or Jeep provides the protection of a four-wheeled vehicle and is ideal for exploring the less-traveled areas of the island. Consider it as a way to get around.

Taxis are easy to hail, reasonably priced, and convenient. There are many ways to traverse the island, with many taxi drivers, my personal favorite being the Scooter Rental, but that isn’t for everyone. When taking an official taxi agree on the fare before starting your journey to avoid any misunderstandings. Pesos or US Dollars are acceptable.

Is It Safe to Walk Around Cozumel?

Yes, walking around Cozumel is very safe, especially in the tourist-frequented areas located on the West side of the island. Numbeo rates walking in Cozumel as 90% during the day and 68% at night. This sate was updated the 14th of August 2025.

Here’s my opinion. During my stay, I spent my every morning and evening walking when I wasn’t riding the scooter hehe. Early before the solicitors/salespeople are out and late in the day long after they are packed up for the night.

It was comfortable, with no presence of gangs, cartels, or sketchy people. At night, you’ll see couples giggling, holding hands walking down the street, or groups of locals standing outside a local drinking spot. Your biggest worry while walking is getting sunburnt. Is Cozumel Safe For Cruise Passengers?

Cozumel’s Cruise port is generally considered to be quite safe for cruise passenger tourists. The local authorities and cruise lines take security seriously to ensure the well-being of visitors. This goes for both of the major cruise ship ports that are used daily. The safety situation in Cozumel means you can walk around Cozumel freely on and off your cruise boat without worry.

Is It safe To Walk at Night In Cozumel?

Yes, walking at night in cozumel is safe just as the above stat shows. Just exercise basic safety precautions, and be aware of your surroundings like anywhere else. If you are planning on exploring the nightlife in Cozumel safely, you will be safe and sound.

There isn’t a lot to choose from because the island’s locals are fairly “ sleepy”. They aren’t big on parties, or drinking. Therefore there aren’t bad people to worry about preying on intoxicated tourists. Cozumel’s nightlife is vibrant and offers a few options for every taste.

Is Cozumel Safe From The Cartel

Yes. The presence of drug cartels in Cozumel is practically nonexistent. There is no Cozumel Cartel, nor has there ever been any proof of it. Unlike the rest of Mexico, the island shows no presence of the common activities associated with the Cartels such as (drugs, and human trafficking.)

There is very little if any known illegal Cartel activity in Cozumel. You don’t hear about it on the news with phrases such as “Cozumel Cartel”, or from people who have traveled which is a good thing. So is there a cartel in Cozumel? No, there is no evidence of it

Dangerous Animals in Cozumel

While Cozumel has its share of wildlife, dangerous encounters are rare. Read our are there dangerous animals in Cozumel article. If any, the ocean is the home of the most dangerous unknown wildlife… jellyfish! Respect the wildlife, give them space and you will have a wonderful time safely exploring the island above and below the water.

Swimming Safety Tips:

Five years ago I almost died Swimming in Cozumel on the shore of the all inclusive Secrets Aurora with my fiance. It’s also the primary reason for many seeking the incredible underwater views. Pay attention to weather conditions and heed any warnings from flags put up by local authorities. Truth is cozumel is safe, but you are more likely to have your belongings stolen by another vacationer before a local. Why, it’s simple the workers have more to lose.

Learn Basic Spanish Phrases

While many locals speak English, especially in tourist areas, learning a few basic Spanish phrases can go a long way in keeping you just slightly safer. After all, knowing exactly what the locals are saying will definitely increase your situational awareness. 

Imagine, a local gives you directions to the local restaurant and you interpret them wrong and now your driving around on a scooter for an additional 30 minutes trying to read street signs, determine where you are, and make wrong turns down a one-way. This could easily make your time less safe unknowingly.

It also shows respect for the local culture and can be incredibly helpful in situations where English isn’t as commonly spoken. They can tell when you are making an effort and that appreciate it. I used Babbel.com to learn Spanish. I no pro, but I can definitely get around the Spanish culture more comfortably.

Respect Local Customs and Laws

Every place has its own set of rules and customs, and Cozumel is no different. So for a safe and enjoyable experience, be respectful of the Mexican island. Respect the local traditions, and adhere to laws, and you’ll find the locals are more than willing to help and welcome you. Not, if you are rude, driving down one way in the wrong direction.

The Start of Parasailing (lift off)

After your harness is attached, you sit down on the rear deck of the boat for safety and the dedicated instructor attached your body harness to line that is connected to the Parasailing (parachute). Then the driver will then speed up and begin towing you into the air.

As the boat speeds up the cable guy starts to slowly release your rope and your feet begin to leave the boat. As you rise up higher and higher, you’ll have the opportunity to take in stunning views of the island and the surrounding sea possibly getting a glimpse of the Carnival cruise ship or any other one that you arrived on.

How long Is A Parasailing Ride

Parasailing Ride last about 12-15 minutes in the air before you start descending down closer to the boat. This all happens so fast and subtlety that you won’t even notice your coming down. Tips For Cozumel Parasailing

I personally have been parasailing seven times throughout the Caribbean. I’ve dealt with grumpy instructors and really friendly ones. Below are my five personal tips to ensure your parasailing flight is a unforgettable experience while in cozumel.

Tip 1: Arrive on time

When you arrive early you signal to the the tour operator you are ready and serious about this. Now you expect them to do the same. Also, there are usually multiple groups of people Parasailing so you don’t want to get left behind.

Tip 2: Tip in advance

This might seem backwards but has me out. You want a incredible experience right? The Parasailing specialist wants to make as much money as possible right? If your the rockstar tourist I know you are (wink) you plan on tipping for after your flight. So, after your harnessed up slide them a tip and say “thanks in advance!”. This works for me 90 percent of the time.

Tip 3: Be prepared

If you have a go pro or something to capture the moment make sure your ready to rock. This will ensure a about process for your flight. Have your swimming suit on, leave extra bags.

Tip 4: Take photos

One my first flight just wanted to enjoy the experience. It’s such an incredible sight while Parasailing you’ll wish you captured the sight. So take a selfie, flip the camera around and take a photo of the beach. Make it fun and when you back home try to identify stuff people will love seeing what your vacation looks like from hundreds of feet in the air!

Tip 5: Do tandem Parasailing

What should I wear to the parasail excursion?

You are welcome to wear whatever you feel comfortable in. We suggest wearing a bathing suit with a light layer of clothing over it. This will keep you comfortable, when you are done with your parasailing tour you will enjoy one of Cozumels beaches. So now you are ready for anything!

Can I bring my camera or phone with me?
