21 Things to do in cozumel

21 Things to do in Cozumel mexico

With so many things to do you might think any tour is a good choice but if you think like that you’ll be disappointed just like I was. These tours are cookie cutter excursions made to fit as many people as possible without specializing in any particular groups of travelers.

This blog will save you disappointment and time reading Google reviews trying to decide. Here’s your first tip. The Pirate Ship tour is NOT ideal for kids. Surprised? Yea, so was I.

Tours are broken down by category for easy reading. Below you will find the list covering the top things to do near cozumel’s cruise port, activities for adults and the best thing to do in Cozumel for families.

Below are the most recommended AND most booked excursions among travelers. They are listed in no particular order and many of them I have personally tried. If while reading your still torn about which activity is best for your group I’m happy to help you decide. Just join the popup and message me directly.

What is the number one thing to do in Cozumel?

The number one thing to do in Cozumel is snorkeling and scuba diving. But there are still plenty of others things to do in Cozumel. Cozumel is famous for the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, with underwater visibility reaching up to 100 feet (30 meters). Visitors flock to the island for world-class water activities, specifically exploring the protected coral reefs of Palancar and the famous starfish at El Cielo.

Besides the water you can make unforgettable memories trying lots of other stuff. When I first started researching everyone talked about how clear the water was so I had to see that first.

But during me 5 day vacation at Secrets resort I got tired of just sitting on the beach. I wanted to explore. Fast forward to now I have revisited over a dozen times and tried almost everything.

Things to do in Cozumel cruise port

For tourists who decide you want to stay within the cruise port area for budget or safety reasons or you just don’t want to venture far these are for you. Below you will find the limited but still fun options for stuff to do in any of cozumels cruise port areas.

Visit Senor Frogs

I recommend checking out senor Frogs for food and entertainment within the cruise port area. It’s only a 4 minute walk outside the terminal and downstairs. It’s not the authentic food I highly recommend but it’s a fun place to try without venturing far. You can find this at the Punta Langosta cruise port.

Experience a underwater Oxygen Bar

Looking for a truly “breathtaking” experience in Cozumel? Try this new cool experience right near  the Puerta Maya cruise terminal, this high-tech aquarium-style lounge offers a social experience like no other on Earth.

Once you submerge, you’ll breathe in refreshing, scented oxygen while enjoying a cocktail of quirky activities:

  • Play: Challenge your friends to a game of underwater Jenga.
  • Communicate: Use specialized underwater tablets to write messages to your friends or the curious onlookers outside.
  • Pose: Hit our underwater photo booth, featuring a customizable digital wall and fun props for the ultimate vacation selfie.

Be prepared to be watched by strangers

Swim at the ports beach club

Within the cruise port they have a small beach area and restaurant that tourists have rated well. It’s called Tequila Go GO. Here you can swim and snorkel. It’s nothing compared to the most popular Cozumel beach clubs on the island but it’s a nice amenity for tourists wanting to stay close to the ship.

Walk around downtown

I highly recommend doing this for everyone. Make sure to read what all tourists should avoid in Cozumel first. Just about a 12 minute walk from Punta Langosta is downtown Cozumel. Here you can feel the island vibes. Cozumel centro and Parquet Bonito Juarez are the middle of downtown. Grab some gelato, shop or just sight see it’s all totally worth it.

Downtown Cozumel is safe for tourists so don’t worry about that. Exploring and shopping are pretty much all you can do, but just walking along the ocean front road is a cool experience.

Things To Do In Cozumel For Families

Traveling with the whole crew or a big family group of 6+ people can be costly and difficult to plan. Especially when you’re mixing grandparents, parents, and little ones you need activities that work for everyone together. Nobody wants to split up on a port day. I have solutions!

The good news is Cozumel is one of the best cruise ports for exactly this. There are a few top things I recommend for large groups, some of these may look familiar but with such a large group your options started to get limited. Here’s what actually works for groups of 6 or more with mixed ages when it comes to things to do in Cozumel for families:

Paradise Beach Club Day

Cost: $65 Per Person  |  Length: All day

Best for: ❌ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

This is the move for large mixed-age groups. Everyone in the same place. Chairs, water, food, drinks and beach allow everyone to break off to do their own thing while still have lots of options like shore snorkeling, paddle boarding, jet skiing and parasailing.

Photo of the beach view at Paradise beach showing the best beach club in cozumel

Our beach during at 1 pm

The  kids can swim, grandparents relax in the shade (always watching) while parents grab a drink at the bar. There is a massive pool if the ocean water isn’t your thing. If you want more excitement try a quick 30 min activity like jet skiing. But there is a very important reason I suggest this first.

Beach clubs are super popular and have a large variety of people, meaning everyone can have someone to talk to without feeling out of place. Kids have others kiddos their age to keep them busy building sand castles. Teenagers can climb on the water obstacle courses or hop on the back of a jet ski with mom or dad.

Easiest way to keep teenagers happy!

Best part? If you book a activity that usually covers the beach club entry cost of 2 people which is around $65. Nobody is locked into a schedule and nobody gets left out. Which leads me to my second recommendation for families visiting Cozumel.

San Gervasio Mayan Ruins

Cost: $6 person   | Length: ANY

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

Image of a Mayan ruins at San gervasio Cozumel

My favorite ruins in the entire park

Mayan ruins are all over mexico and a big tourist attraction. It’s a great activity for the whole crew and even when it rains. Not the greatest for kids under 6 because they won’t have much to entertain them. However, it’s a very cost effective way to spend a few hours even though they have a souvenir shop that can add up the total quickly.

You’ll feel the powerful energy of the ancient world as you walk these paths, giving you a deep sense of connection to the island’s history that makes your vacation feel truly meaningful. There are tons to explore. Expect lots of walking and often large groups from cruise ships on buses.

El Cielo Snorkel Tour Top Choice

Cost: $75 Person  |  Length: 1.5 hrs

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

A girl in the water snorkeling with goggles showing a peace sign

Waist-deep water, starfish, and manta rays. This one works specifically because it’s accessible — you don’t need to be a strong swimmer and there’s no deep water involved. Grandparents who wouldn’t normally snorkel can do this one comfortably. Kids go absolutely crazy for the starfish. It’s the one tour where every age group comes back talking about the same moment.

El Cielo snorkeling tour photo on the way there

Great for all ages as your case are above. See 3 reefs 15-30 feet deep b fore setting off to El Cielo where things calm down and get incredibly clear where I recommend everyone take the opportunity to grab a photo how clear the water is. Tour guides will prepare fresh fruits, pico and drinks for everyone.

Kaokao Chocolate Factory

Cost: $51 Person  |  Length: 1.5 hrs

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

This is great for families because they can handle  up to 12 people in a tour keeping everyone together and giving them something to do. Satisfy the kids sweet tooth and learn something cool with a fun, hands-on workshop to learn about Maya chocolate production.

It’s a 5 part experience starting with history, tour of the facility to watch them make it before you make your own. With start times from 9am and th last one being at 1 pm you have flexible timing to plan around it.

In my honest opinion, the price is the only kicker. $51 is pricy when you get above 4 people  when there is still a entire 1/2 day to fill with things to do. Either way it’s a great option for families looking for things to do that keep everyone together.

Things to do in Cozumel with kids

A digital flyer showing a familiar with the caption things to do in Cozumel with kids

Vacationing to Cozumel with kids add a whole new  complexity to the planning your trip. You have to factor safety as a top priority, nap time, the costs of feeding everyone plus entry fees. You need something that can keep you (mom and dad) entertained and all of the kids A single tour for $30 easily spirals into a $500 experience when it’s all said and done.

Of you research and planning this can be a easy process by choosing the RIGHT excursion. Below you will find my top recommendations for things to do in Cozumel with kids that offers fun for the whole family, while considering keeping logistical coats low and safety as #1 priority for all ages.

Playa Mia Adventure Park

Cost: $65 Person  |  Length: All day   *Closed*

Dolphin experience (Chankanab park)

Cost: $65 Per Person  |  Length: All day

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

Book a Dolphin Adventure Tour with Jet Ski Cozumel!

Where the underwater world visits the surface… The experience of being able to touch a real, live Dolphin that you’ve only seen on TV is a once-in-a-lifetime memory for most people. Make it a memory with someone you love. It’s very popular for all vacationer types. As a 30 year old I loved this when I went with my fiance.

I suggest booking in advance. The dolphin discovery is inside chankanaab amusement park. Everyone gets to swim with dolphins and you can pay additional for a photo which they are taking without you knowing. You have the option to stay all day if you want but the dolphins experience will take approx two hours.

Otoch (Authentic) Mayan Experience

Cost: $29 person   | Length: 2.5 hrs

Best for: ❌ Resort ❌ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

A chance to meet real Maya hosts during the most immersive experience on the island. Join a ceremonial welcome, try hands-on crafts and cooking, share a homemade meal, and hear living traditions. I always love learning about how th culture lived before. There are multiple “Mayan experiences on Cozumel Island but this one is the most authentic. It’s easy to forget your on an excursion.

When I compares it to ones I’ve tried in Honduras and puerta Maya the Otoch experience takes the cake when it comes to making your feel how the Mayans felt. You won’t just watch; you’ll smell the roasting cacao and feel the warmth of a traditional ceremony, leaving you with a genuine understanding of our culture that stays with you long after you leave.

A phot collage showing the fun things to do in cozumel Mayan experience

The best Mayan experience hands down

My only downside to this is that it doesn’t work much check the “fun” box for us. We absolutely LOVED the 2+ hours of entertainment but we wanted to do some splashing and beach lounging. So we still ended up booking a day at the beach club. My suggestion is to pair this with a activity that isn’t long but also gets your access to the beach, and all the amenities that are included to complete the day.

Punta Sur Eco Park

El Cielo Snorkel Tour

Cost: $75 person   | Length: 1 or 3 hrs

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

The Best things to do with n Cozumel shown by a 4 image collage of a Cozumel snorkeling tour

Photos of our popular El Cielo snorkeling tour

The must try activity in cozumel is snorkeling. Tour lengths range from 1- 3 hours (choose when you book) and include multiple reefs, and the world famous El Cielo beach. Swim in water so clear you won’t believe your eyes! You can be sure you’re not dreaming because you can touch the starfish and feel the manta rays swimming at your feet to remind you. English speaking your guides prepare food fresh pico de gallo and beer.

The water is waist deep, making this snorkeling excursion a perfect activity for kids and families. You can snorkel almost anywhere on the island but for the best snorkeling experience like you see above and below you will need to book a Cozumel snorkeling tour.

El Cielo Reef is only accessible by boat which is why the water is so clear. Shore snorkeling is really cool but nothing, I mean NOTHING compares to the experience El cielo. Book the 10am tour and opt for the 3 hour excursion. This gives you enough time to spend on the beach relaxing before returning to the ship.

Things to do in Cozumel for adults

A image of a couple in a pool smiling. With the title things to do in Cozumel for adults above them.

As a couple in cozumel, what’s important is seeing the person you care about smiling and happy. My suggestions below will guarantee you both enjoy each other without the distractions and annoyances common to travelers. These Cozumel activities for couples will take your mind off work and help you build memories to drown out your past (and future) mistakes.

The first time I visited Cozumel I proposed to my fiance at Secrets Aurora. Since then we have been back every year and tried almost all of the recommended “top” things in Cozumel for adults. Not all were as good as they sounded, so here are my personal suggestions for the top things to do in cozumel for couples.

Remember: More does NOT equal better. The point of vacation is to relax so don’t feel pressured to do everything.

Paradise Beach Club Day Pass

Cost: $75 person

Best for: ❌ Resort ❌ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

A beach club for the day seems like nothing special at first, but I promise you it’s heavily underrated. Like the saying goes “time flies when you’re having fun!”. A day spent at a PREMIUM beach club is exactly what every couple needs.

Delicious drinks, awesome music to remind you that your on vacation. Water toys, a refreshing pool and the sights and sounds of the ocean make for a combination to make any spouse happy. If you want to spice it up excursions are a easily added amenity usually just a few feet away.

Pool view of Paradise beach club

The trick is choosing the RIGHT beach club that matches your tastes. We spent the day at Paradise Beach (pictured above) which is the undeniable best all-inclusive Beach Club experience you can get in cozumel. We got a cabana, did some Parasailing and ate (what I would call top tasting beach club food), swam and drank literally all day. She had zero complaints and for 7 hours we were the definition of happy tourists.

Beach clubs are not created equal and there are other great options for adults. You can’t just throw a dart and get a memorable experience. There are only a few I recommend for couples and I cover these in my Beach clubs in cozumel article.

Pirate Ship Cruise

Cost: $103 Person  |  Length: 3.5 hrs

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

A cool opportunity to eat, play experience the life of a pirate. This activity is an exciting maritime adventure that offers a unique experience aboard a themed ship.

I haven’t personally tried this tour but I’ve overheard many travelers talk about it. It’s a great experience for adults. Lots of music, drinking (tequila & beer) sexual innuendos. A engaging and super entertaining experience I personally wouldn’t recommend for kids.

Explore Cozumel In Buggy

Cost: $25-145 USD

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

Jeep tours are near the top of the list. The good ones will pick you up at your location (port or hotel). On the island, the tours can be either guided or unguided. I prefer the freedom to explore without limits. We rented a dune buggy (5-spd manual), scooter and a jeep to cruise the island. My favorite was the dune buggy because we got music 😉. Parking is easy and free.

Take Private Taxi Tour

Cost: $199 person

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ❌ Cruise

Experience the luxury of ZERO of planning. Literally, just lean back while a local friend (taxi driver) handles the driving, whisking you away to secret beaches and local eats so you can focus entirely on him/her and the view without a single worry about directions, traffic, etc.

A snapshot of our private taxi tour

We did it for 6 hours. They picked us up at our Airbnb, he asked us what we enjoyed, made suggestions and we said yes/no. Everything was included in the price except food. These tours are geared towards seeing things in Cozumel like culture and history. Not so much touristy “activities”. No jet skiing, ATV, Zipline.

Possible activities: punta sur, snorkeling, tequila tastin, Mayan ruins.

We stopped at the world famous Mojito. Swam at Chen Rio, punta sur and stopped to see the alligators. This took up 3 hours. He just hung out chatting with locals while we relaxed and drank. From time to time he would pop back up and check when we wanted to leave or if we needed anything. Overall a awesome experience.

Next we got our PRIVATE tequila experience. I personally loved it, nobody but us attended. Very intimate, delicious, fun activity. From there went to a cave that used to be a cenote.

Go Parasailing

Cost: $75 person

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

This is a bonus, 30 minutes of your day will lead to an unmatched photo opportunity with that person you care about. The best part is you won’t get wet. It’s a simple addition to your day. Consider it the cherry on top of an already epic vacation.

Jet Skiing Tour + Snorkel ⭐popular

Cost: $199 person

Best for: ✅ Resort ✅ Airbnb ✅ Cruise

For couples wanting multiple activities like the exploration of underwater life this guided 90-min jet ski + snorkel tour is for you. It combines high octane excitement, jet skiing outside the typical limits with an opportunity to swim with tropical fish. Wrapping up the day with a complimentary meal and a relaxing time with the water at your feet with staff bringing the margaritas non stop.

Considered the perfect budget friendly activity for couples, this tour gets booked more than any of our activities. Usually couples have to choose between snorkeling or jet skiing. This tour combines both top activities with food and drinks + beach club access. One taxi ride, one tour, everything you need.

Free Things to Do in Cozumel

Fun & Free Things To Do in Cozumel

Top Free things to do in cozumel

I’m gonna be honest with you, there aren’t many free things to do in the cozumel but there are a some! In this blog I layout the free, fun and inexpensive ways to explore Cozumel on a budget. These recommendations are great for cruise passengers, elderly couples or families.

Cruise vacations can get expensive when your booking any of the 21 things to do in Cozumel mexico trying to create memories at every port call and especially if Cozumel is the last stop in your itinerary. So finding free things to do near the cozumel Cruise port is essential and I have some!

Image of cozumel centro

Cozumel Centro during the day

Cozumels cruise ports are friendly and walkable. You will find tons of shops to pick up the common souvenirs and places to get a really good Mexican food. The truth remains the same your limited.

ONLY free ways to explore Cozumel:

  • Swimming
  • Walking
  • Eating

I know the last one isn’t free but you will see what we have to work with soon enough. Don’t give up because right outside your port is stuff to do in addition to this list of 11 things to avoid doing in Cozumel.

As soon as you walk out of the port onto the public street turn left and walk about 2ish miles (or take a $10 taxi) to downtown. That’s where the cool stuff is.

Everything around the port will cost and that’s where they trap you into spending your hard earned money. In case your wondering yes, it is safe to walk around even with the cozumel travel advisory. The immediate area outside “port area” is often considered barely local. So you have to go further for more authentic vibes.

Let’s dive into visiting Cozumel on a budget!

Does Cozumel Have a free beach?

Yes, Cozumel has several free public beaches where you can enjoy the Caribbean Sea without an entrance fee. As of 2026 Playa Chen Rio is the best 100% free beach in Cozumel on the eastern side of the island. On the western side, visitors can swim for free at Playa Casitas Beach.

A phot of a beach from shore showing the ocean also as one of answers to the question. Does Cozumel have a free beach

San martin

Playa Palancar has historically been the most famous free beach on the island, known for its wide stretch of white sand and proximity to the Palancar Reef but started charging a entrance fee as of late 2025.

Cozumels Free Things To Do

These are my best tips for American travelers. Skip the junk trinkets and try these no cost adventures without constantly pulling out your wallet.

Swim at a Public Beach

Cost: Free

Forget the massive, pricey beach clubs. You can experience the clear blue water for free, if you know where to look. Don’t assume all beaches are free because they are not.  Take a dip, read a book or lay down a towel and relax without workers pestering you.

Cozumles free beach playa Casitas

Beach Playa Casita

Playa Casitas is the best beach for cruise passengers because it’s about 3 miles from the Cozumel cruise ports and a simple 8 minute taxi ride. $20 will cover up to 4 people. It’s not your traditional because in the sense there isn’t soft white sand, it is pretty rocky but it’s a beach. Here you can find shade, grass and access to beautiful blue water completely free.

Cozumel has miles of coastline that’s controlled by private beach clubs but I recently updated this list of the public beaches in Cozumel that let you swim and relax without a cover charge. Grab your towel and head straight for the water.

Image of cozumel free beach

Playa San Martin

Above is a picture of San Francisco beach. But it doesn’t beat my personal favorite which is Playa Martin. Its not ideal  Me and the girlfriend rented scooters and took a trip over there to just get away from the traffic. On the scooter it took us about 15 minutes to get there but the ride was cool. We got to see other parts of the city.

San Martin Beach has a perfect, relaxed vibe, and the water is exactly that clear, turquoise color you came for. The best part is that you don’t need a day pass pass to enjoy it. It was cloudy the day we went to be sure to choose a sunny day!

Image of entrance to Cozumel San martin beach

San martin beach on a cloudy day

Don’t worry about eating because of you get hungry or need to use the bathroom during your beach picnic there is a place to eat just down the road. It’s where I took the picture of the group on scooters below. But if your traveling to San Martin your likely staying in Cozumel for more than a day and I have a great recommendation for you.

Walking Downtown

Cost: Free

The area around the ferry terminal is technically San Miguel de Cozumel, and it’s where all the action is. Don’t rush past it. Take some time and simply walk around down here. This is roughly 2ish miles from the cruise port and you can walk there. I recommend bringing water if it’s a hot day.

There are private tours that make this a core theme of the tour. Even the Razor tours drive down through downtown.

Tourists in downtown Cozumel walking for frew

Cozumels Downton area

There is local food and also Americanized places to eat like Burger King and, Buffalo wild Wings. Sometimes they host concerts and events in the middle. When I was here I hung up my hammock and just watched the locals and had my fair share of ice cream from the local gelato shop.

Image of shopping downtown in Cozumel free walking tour

Shopping area downtown

Stroll along El Malecón (the broad waterfront sidewalk), watch the cruise ships come and go, and check out the statues in the main square. This is where you get a real feel for local life once the day-trippers head back to the mainland on their playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip. If you want to do a little shopping this is the place.

The view during peak time downtown

It’s can get a little annoying with all of the locals trying to pull you into their shops or sell you something. But a simple “no thank you” usually gets the job done. Downtown (Cozumel Centro) is actually a comfortable distance away from the cruise ports so you will find different kinds of souvenirs here that you won’t find in the port.

Mega Grocery Store

Cost: Free

Image of the front entrance of mega grocery store

Cozumels only grocery store

This might sounds strange but hear me out. If the goal is to experience Cozumel you must do this. Each time I stayed in Cozumel at a Airbnb we had to shop for food and it turned into a very enlightening experience. You get to see different varieties of food you would never see. I found it fun seeing variations of food we don’t have here and also one we do!

The deli section of Mega

The way the Mexican culture hands food is pretty interesting. They don’t cover the meat up and eggs air sit on shelves unrefrigerated. As a bonus of you need something this is the cheapest place to pick stuff up. They take cash or credit and if you need to use the ATM this is a great reason to come besides you can save money buying alcohol here too!

A group of Mexican ATM in the mega shopping store

Atms are near the exit

Whole your here take the opportunity to get cash from the ATM. As you can see there are multiple banks to choose from bit it doesn’t matter. Just make sure to always DECLINE the conversion rate. It will adopt the banks inflated conversion rate instead of Mexican countries rate.

Mercado Municipal Market

Cost: Free

One of the entrances to the market

I discovered this local market on accident by wandering further outside of downtown. Similar to the flea market in the way it’s open to the public but very different. It’s located probably 7 blocks behind the Cozumel Centro plaza. Here you can experience where the locals shop and eat.

One of the eating areas inside the market

You can’t see it from this photo but there are 8-10 places to grab local food and it’s open to the public. I didn’t see any tourist here but about 70 locals roamed about shopping for fresh fruit and fish. We had eaten before find this or I would’ve have happily bought food because it smelled great (when I didn’t smell the freshly caught fish).

The freshest fruit you will ever taste

I tried a pineapple and it’s was the most incredible flavor ever. To this day I refuse to eat pineapples out of the can. I will only buy it fresh. The guy here taught me how to smell the pineapple and know when one is ready to be eaten.

They also have shopping areas for you to pickup different kinds of souvenirs (different from the common junk trinkets near the port). Unique style stuff. I forgot what I bought but I was happy. So try shopping here and explore.

Explore Local Street Food

Cost: Free

Okay, this one is almost free. You get the experience for free, but it will be hard not to buy something! This kinda of food you want to eat FRESH so make sure you didn’t eat anything and don’t try to save it for later. Street vendors don’t accept card so bring cash.

Wander away from the main tourist streets and find where the locals eat. The smells of fresh cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork) and grilling corn on the cob are incredible. Stop, watch them make the tacos, soak up the atmosphere, and if you do decide to spend a dollar or two, you’ll get the best, most authentic meal of your trip.

Snorkel From Shore

Cost: Free

If your looking to peak under the water and see the bright fishes you can do that WITHOUT paying. They are everywhere, just bring your own gear. If you didn’t bring it you can always buy some at the local grocery store. Did you know some of the best coral formations are right off the public shorelines?

If you bring your own mask and fins, and you can jump right in. I recommend water shoes because most of the beaches are rocky. The water visibility in Cozumel is insane, even near the beach. I took this photo with my drone at money bar beach. i explain how to get there in my blog below covering best places to snorkel.

Pro Tip: For spots that offer the best free snorkeling, you’ll want to check out the more south-facing public beaches Playa Palancar. These are the best you’ll get.

The reefs start closer to shore in certain areas. I share the details for the best beach to snorkel for free in cozumel as a good opportunity for you to see the marine life.

Fun & Cheap Things to Do in Cozumel (Under $20)

Ok that list was shorter than you expected huh… I told you, there aren’t many! Now if your looking for other inexpensive things to do in Cozumel keep reading. These are just a couple things from my full article covering the most popular things to do in cozumel. This article has the popular tours and what most tourists recommend on Reddit blogs and facebooks groups besides our Parasailing and jet skis.

It’s time to experience some of the island’s best activities without shelling out major cash. These are high-value, low-cost activities that give you a huge bang for your buck .

Visit Sunset Bar

Price: Cheap

If your looking for a experience this place is a popular spot between Puerta Maya cruise port and downtown. They are well known for the good vibes and happy hour between 1-3pm and 7-8pm. It’s a beachfront bar & Grill that also has access point you can use to jump into the ocean. There is a shaded upper and lower portion where you can enjoy good food peacefully. It doesn’t get crazy busy and the staff aren’t pushy.

They have a beach area you can use if you bring your own snorkel gear. It is rocky you you must bring/ buy water shoes but that’s why I suggested Megas grocery store above! Sunset is know for good vibes and food.

Explore The Island on a Scooter

Price: $25 $19 (w/discount)

This is my personal favorite way to explore the island. Well anywhere I go to be honest. Scooters are cheap, easy to park, give you a sense of freedom instead of being cooped up in a car. You can rent a scooter for a full day (24 hours) $25.

You will see tons of Cozumel travel blogs warning you not to rent a scooter and I completely disagree. It’s probably top 3 ways to see cozumel. I have rented from a wonderful and honest guy named Carlos everytime I visit. These mopeds are well taken care of and newer. Here we are below on my last trip.

Me and the scooter rental onwer sitting on scooters

Me and Carlos the owner

As a way to continue providing value he has agreed to allow me to offer my blog visitors a small discount. For a discount all you have to do is mention Jet Ski Cozumel and you will save 15%.

Literally, that’s it. He has offered to take it off your rental cost on a scooter or jeep. It’s that easy. Parking in cozumel is free and always available (unless your renting a car)

See The Crocodiles at Punta Sur

Price: $ 16

While the full admission to Punta Sur Ecological Park is $16, you can often find local tour operators that offer a specific stop-off to see the alligator viewing area for a very low cost, or even just view them along the main highway if you know where to look. It’s a quick, exciting glimpse into the island’s wild side.

This one is free but punta sur is much cooler

Visit the Cozumel Museum

Price: $11

If you hit a rainy patch or just need a break from the sun, the local museum is a fantastic, cheap escape. We did it, it was quite, barely anyone there. It would be cool for a family but not so much for us.

The entrance fee is minimal, and you get a great overview of the island’s history, Mayan heritage, and marine life. It’s a great way to deepen your appreciation for Cozumel.

I hope this helps you plan an amazing trip without emptying your pockets! Now go read things to do in Cozumel mexico so you get the maximum fun out of your vacation to cozumel.

Cozumel Day Trip: Playa To Cozumel

Playa del Carmen to Cozumel Day trip: Ultimate Guide

Taking a Cozumel day trip from Playa del Carmen to cozumel has become one of those things im glad I experienced. Me and the girlfriend stayed in Playa Del Carmen for a week because she had been there and I hadn’t.

Image of playa del Carmen and Cozumel with arrow showing from one to the other

So, we flew into Playa and then went to Cozumel for the day and learned a ton! Below you will find everything I learned during our day trip from prices to top excursions to maximize your time there.

Cozumel is so close that it almost feels like cheating — I can wake up in Playa, decide on a whim to go, and be stepping onto the island before I’ve even finished my morning coffee. Cozumel is safe for americans and has all the adventure you can pack into 12 hours. Here is what you can expect to find:

Is a Day Trip To Cozumel Worth it?

Hands down, absolutely a day trip from playa del carmen to Cozumel is worth it! Look,  I understand the hesitation. You’re on a precious, limited vacation, and sacrificing a whole day for travel feels like a huge risk. But the money you will save just from eating in Cozumel vs Playa justifies the day trip especially if you combine it with my list of the 7 free ways to explore cozumel on a budget

⚠️ Cruise Passengers Read This ⚠️

Cozumel port closures happen more often the cruise lines admit. Most travelers don’t know this until the day of. When wind or weather forces a port closure, all docking in Cozumel shut down and most operators keep your money. Their 24-hour cancellation policy doesn’t care that you found out that morning. I’ve watched this happen to hundreds of passengers who booked through Viator, their cruise line, and local companies.

So I created a free tool for travelers arriving by cruise ship to know important details 5 days sooner. Don’t get caught off guard again.

Playa is very… developed. Also, busier and more expensive! I paid $12 for a bottled water! (more on this crap later) So we planned a day trip to Cozumel which was easier than expected. I asked you this one question. Can you name a better way to get unforgettable memories than traveling like a local.

7 Reasons To Take A Day Trip

I firmly believe making the Cozumel day trip from Playa del Carmen is the best decision you can make of your staying in Playa. They are two very different world existing so close to each other. Here is why I think this budget-friendly adventure is absolutely worth your time:

  • Cost: Most things are cheaper in Cozumel vs playa.
  • Beach Clubs: The beach clubs are simply better.
  • Food: The food is more authentic.
  • Best of Both Worlds: staying in Playa Del Carmen you get the hustle and bustle. They have great night clubs. Cozumel is a beach vibe all the way.
  • MORE excursions: Most of the excursions you will see advertising are either in Cozumel or Telum. For example our Jade Cavern ATV jungle tour and Parasailing doesn’t happen in Playa only Cozumel.
  • The Travel Time is Minimal: The biggest myth is that the travel time is too long. It’s not! The ferry is fast (just 45 minutes), meaning you can easily fit 8–10 hours of incredible sightseeing and best excursions onto the island without needing to rush.
  • The Experience is Unique: Cozumel is famous worldwide for a reason—it’s home to the second largest barrier reef in the world. If you want to experience world-class snorkeling or Parasailing tours. A day trip to Cozumel is your one-day passport to that adventure.
  • Customization: While you can book expensive packaged tours, I’ll show you exactly how we planned our day on budget and just went with the flow. This makes the trip fun, and far more budget-friendly than most other excursions available on the mainland.

How Far Is Cozumel From Playa Del Carmen

The distance between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen across the Caribbean Sea is approximately 12 miles (19 km). That isn’t very far but the only way to get there is by ferry and I cover that below. Ferries run regularly from the ferry terminal in downtown Playa del Carmen to the main pier in San Miguel de Cozumel.

How To Get Cozumel From Playa

There are ONLY two ferry going between Cozumel and playa del carmen, trust me this process is easier than you might think. The ride over is a peaceful 40-45 min ride. Most people just show up and take whatever boat is leaving next. You can buy one way or round-trip tickets.

Playa del Carmen to cozumel day trip map view

You can catch the Ferry at the Playa del Carmen Ferry Terminal. Ultramar’s ferries are bright yellow and blue, modern and sleek, with comfortable seating and frequent departures.

The ferry from playa to Cozumel docked at the pier with people boarding it

Alternately, Winjet’s brilliant orange and blue fleet offers comfortable seating and regularly scheduled departures. Both ferries are winners.

Winjet high speed ferry from Cozumel to playa

How Long Does The Ferry Take From Playa to Cozumel

Travel Time: 45 minutes

Run Times: 7am – 10pm

The ferry ride from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel takes approximately 40 to 45 minutes on the high-speed passenger ferries.

This is the standard crossing time for the major ferry operators (Ultramar, Winjet) passenger ferry companies run from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on the hour between the two destinations alternating schedules throughout the day.

While the trip across the channel is short, I recommend you get there early to be sure you don’t miss it. Arrive at the Maritime Terminal in Playa del Carmen at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time for ticketing and boarding.

How Much Is The Ferry From Playa To Cozumel

As of today one-way ferry tickets from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel costs  $17 USD for adults and $12 USD for children. There is no price difference between adults and kids. If you book on bookaway, if you use the Ultramar official site there is a ticket price difference.

While a round trip is approximately $35 USD for adults. Prices can vary depending on the company and whether you buy a one-way or round-trip ticket. But as of today December 5th, 2025 that price is $17 when booking shuttle on Bookaway.

Image of a digital ticket from bookaway.com showing Cost, time and amenities how much is a ferry from playa to Cozumel.

A screenshot from Bookaway.com

All of the ferry companies have kiosk near the ferry pier. I highly recommend just getting a one-way ticket and then buy a ticket when you are ready to come back. So your not waiting for a ferry because you already bought a return ticket or trying to catch a specific ferry.

Ferry Tickets Costs

  • One-way adult: $17 USD (320 peso)
  • Premium Class : $20 USD (364 peso)
  • Round trip adult: $35 USD
  • One-way child (ages 5–11): $12 USD
  • Round trip child (ages 5–11): $24 USD
Ultramar ferry ticket cost is pesos for adults and children from playa del Carmen to cozumel

Where To Get Ferry Tickets

You can buy high speed passenger ferry tickets from playa del Carmen to cozumel in three different ways. Each ferry operator has their own self service kiosk at the piers that allows you to buy your ferry ticket. Also you have two additional ways to buy your ticket for your playa del Carmen to cozumel day trip:

  • At Ferry port (kiosk)
  • Passenger Ferry websites (Below)
  • Through third-party vendors like Bookaway.com

Click below to visit official ferry websites for tickets.

You should remember that the standard round-trip ticket for your day trip to Cozumel from playa del Carmen often assigns an exact return time when purchasing. You might run across a Cozumel excursion near the end of your day, and the freedom to take a later ferry might be worth the difference in the cost. I always buy two one-way tickets.

Pro Tip: Don’t buy a round trip ticket!

Premium ferry pass ever area

Premium air conditioned area

Additionally, you can also reserve seats in the more popular areas of the ship that have air conditioning and shade. I HIGHLY recommend this, baking the sun coming across kinda sucks . If you’re lucky enough to be a resident, bring your residency card to show at the toll booth for a discounted ticket.

Should You Bring Your Car

I often hear travelers ask about bringing their rental car over. Maybe you got a good deal on a rental from Cancun and are staying on Cozumel. While it is certainly possible to save time by having your own car on the island, I generally advise against it for a single playa del Carmen to cozumel mexico day trip.

Car transporting ferry from playa del Carmen to cozumel

The car ferry takes about the same time as the passenger ferry (45 minutes) but departs from the Calica Mexico Cruise Port, which is about three miles south of the city, requiring extra travel time on the mainland.

This option is mostly for long-term visitors, those hauling large gear, or if you have a huge group. However here is a great guide I found for those of you taking a car from playa to Cozumel.

  • Operators: Transcaribe and UltraCarga operate the boats.
  • The Caveat: Pricing for both cars and passengers is significantly higher than the passenger ferry, and they have very limited daily departures. You must book this in advance.

Are The Beaches Better in Cozumel or Playa Del Carmen

There is no doubt that the beaches on cozumel’s island are much better than Playa Del Carmen. Cozumels beaches are tropical and relaxing vs plays beaches that are developed by buildings and full of seaweed parts of the year that really stinks.

It’s always windy and not relaxing. If you want the ultimate beach experience try a  free beach in Cozumel to satisfy your desire.

Where To Eat On Your Day Trip

I’m going to be completely honest. I have eaten at over 3 dozen (yes 36!) places in Cozumel mexico. Not all of them were good that’s for sure. I’ve tried Armanian, Italian, Belizian and of course Mexican and feel like I would be cheating you if I didn’t give you my favorite places to eat in Cozumel and simply repeat food spots you see on EVERY other blog.

Image of two plate of food. With a red x over them to avoid

Beach club food is cheap, and who comes to Mexico to eat at the Buffalo Wild Wings right at the cruise port? Senor Frogs is popular, but prices are high. I don’t know about you, but I hate getting over charged for basic food like what you find at over 50% of the beach clubs.

Larger places like what I just named above have a ridiculous peso conversion rate that is higher than other places on the island. If you ask me it’s a rip off! So I created a Cozumel Food Guide that helps

The author eating a a ice blended chocolate beverage

Me enjoying my favorite desert (alcoholic)

you skip the bland overpriced food near the cruise ports and get a taste of authentic local food for FRACTIONS of the cost near the port. You can expect larger portions, cheaper prices and flavors that are simply worth the 5 minute trip off the main strip.

I’m talking mind blowing cheap (because their home is there business) and the same places that the locals eat. Some of these places they don’t speak English but the food is phenomenal! Here is a preview of a couple places I tried.

Day Trip Packing List

After years of planning these trips, I’ve learned that the secret to a great day is packing light and smart. Especially if your concerned about cozumel weather in December which is the most popular time to visit. Here is my definitive list of what we always pack, followed by a critical security warning based on our own experiences:

  • Sunglasses
  • Towel
  • Swimsuit
  • quick-drying cover-up
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Backpack
  • Reef-Safe Sunscreen
  • Cash/Card
  • Water Bottle
  • Phone
  • Ferry Tickets

Lastly, don’t worry about how you’ll get around Cozumel once you set foot on the Island. I cover all that next. You can rent a car, jeep, scooter, or golf cart when ready, but booking ahead is always a good idea.

How To Get Around On a Day Trip

Don’t worry, once you step off the ferry, getting around the island is the easiest part of the trip! You will see taxes lined up to your left. Get in line they are first come first serve.

  • Taxis: The simplest option. Find them right outside the terminal for a direct ride to any beach or excursion.
  • Scooters: My personal favorite for fun! Rent one near the ferry terminal to cruise the coastal road at your own pace.
  • Dune Buggy Rentals:Conveniently located but generally not necessary unless you plan to drive the entire island loop.
  • Walking: The main town of San Miguel is very walkable—perfect for a quick look around the pier area.

Now that we’ve solved the logistics, the next section is the most exciting: The Best Excursions!

Pro Tip: Uber and Lift don’t currently operate on the island.

Should I Book Excursions In Advance

Yes, book at least 2 hours in advance to be safe. It all depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. If you’re planning to take a tour or excursion, booking in advance is a good decision, especially if you choose the more popular choices.

Visit the Mayan Ruins

When we took our day trip it started raining. With the beach being cancelled we decided to checkout San Gervasio Park, the oldest excavated Mayan ruin on the island. It was really cool to see how they used to live and learn about the culture of all the Mayans and how they disappeared .

Pros to San Gervasio

  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Great for families

San Gervasio is an archaeological site that has something for everyone. The site is just the right amount of space for parents to let the little ones have some freedom to explore.

Trip to Mayan ruins on Cozumel

What’s more, San Gervasio can also accommodate those with limited mobility because it’s a relatively small space, allowing exploration at your own pace

Jungle ATV Excursion

If you are game for some rough-and-tumble fun, booking an Cozumel jungle ATV excursion can be a unique way to explore some of the harder-to-reach areas of Cozumel. For only $75/each everyone gets their own four-wheeler to venture through the jungle.

You start at the beach club and head down city streets for about 10 minutes the you head into the jungle. Through heavily wooded areas, through the rock quarry where the tour guides let you really let loose. It’s was super duper fun especially hitting the mud puddles! A photo from my go pro is below.

If you want to explore the Jade Cavern cenote that is possible for an additional entrance fee ($15). If you want to see the rugged side of the island and it’s beauty from a different perspective this is a great for people who are tired of the beach

Visit A Cenote

I have been to every cenote in cozumel, also ones in the Dominican Republic. You will regret not seeing it with your own eyes. A cenote is an underground chamber that becomes accessible when the ceiling collapses. As a result, the cenote contains collected rainwater and spring water, stalactites and stalagmites, and lush plant life growing above.

For me, it is one of the best excursions in Cozumel, with still, clear water flowing through hidden caverns carved out of the limestone that’s the island’s foundation. One of the most famous cenotes on Cozumel is the Jade Caverns Cenote. You can visit it with our ATV tour.

A submarine expedition is one of the best excursions in Cozumel, and it comes with bragging rights. Think about it–how many people have ridden in a submarine before?

Can You Just Walk Around the Island on Your Day Trip to Cozumel?

Most Definitely! The best excursions in Cozumel may be the hiking trails in cozumel that run across it. They wind through rocky paths, the beach, and the jungle to hidden lagoons and secluded coves. You can even hike to Mayan ruins. When you see how flat the island is you might not expect much of a workout on your hike. However, making your way through the swaths of the jungle will raise your heartbeat!
