Taking a Cozumel day trip from Playa del Carmen to cozumel has become one of those things im glad I experienced. Me and the girlfriend stayed in Playa Del Carmen for a week because she had been there and I hadn’t.

So, we flew into Playa and then went to Cozumel for the day and learned a ton! Below you will find everything I learned during our day trip from prices to top excursions to maximize your time there.

Cozumel is so close that it almost feels like cheating — I can wake up in Playa, decide on a whim to go, and be stepping onto the island before I’ve even finished my morning coffee. Cozumel is safe for americans and has all the adventure you can pack into 12 hours. Here is what you can expect to find:

 

Is a Day Trip To Cozumel Worth it?

Hands down, absolutely a day trip from playa del carmen to Cozumel is worth it! Look,  I understand the hesitation. You’re on a precious, limited vacation, and sacrificing a whole day for travel feels like a huge risk. But the money you will save just from eating in Cozumel vs Playa justifies the day trip especially if you combine it with my list of the 7 free ways to explore cozumel on a budget

Cozumel port closures happen more often the cruise lines admit. Most travelers don’t know this until the day of. When wind or weather forces a port closure, all docking in Cozumel shut down and most operators keep your money. Their 24-hour cancellation policy doesn’t care that you found out that morning. I’ve watched this happen to hundreds of passengers who booked through Viator, their cruise line, and local companies.

Playa is very… developed. Also, busier and more expensive! I paid $12 for a bottled water! (more on this crap later) So we planned a day trip to Cozumel which was easier than expected. I firmly believe making the Cozumel day trip from Playa del Carmen is the best decision you can make of your staying in Playa. They are two very different world existing so close to each other. Here is why I think this budget-friendly adventure is absolutely worth your time:

How Far Is Cozumel From Playa Del Carmen

The distance between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen across the Caribbean Sea is approximately 12 miles (19 km). That isn’t very far but the only way to get there is by ferry and I cover that below. Ferries run regularly from the ferry terminal in downtown Playa del Carmen to the main pier in San Miguel de Cozumel.

 

How To Get Cozumel From Playa

There are ONLY two ferry going between Cozumel and playa del carmen, trust me this process is easier than you might think. The ride over is a peaceful 40-45 min ride. Most people just show up and take whatever boat is leaving next. You can buy one way or round-trip tickets. 

You can catch the Ferry at the Playa del Carmen Ferry Terminal. Ultramar’s ferries are bright yellow and blue, modern and sleek, with comfortable seating and frequent departures.

Alternately, Winjet’s brilliant orange and blue fleet offers comfortable seating and regularly scheduled departures. Both ferries are winners.

 

How Long Does The Ferry Take From Playa to Cozumel

Travel Time: 45 minutes 

Run Times: 7am – 10pm

The ferry ride from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel takes approximately 40 to 45 minutes on the high-speed passenger ferries.

This is the standard crossing time for the major ferry operators (Ultramar, Winjet) passenger ferry companies run from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on the hour between the two destinations alternating schedules throughout the day.

While the trip across the channel is short, I recommend you get there early to be sure you don’t miss it. Arrive at the Maritime Terminal in Playa del Carmen at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time for ticketing and boarding.

 

How Much Is The Ferry From Playa To Cozumel

As of today one-way ferry tickets from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel costs  $17 USD for adults and $12 USD for children. There is no price difference between adults and kids. If you book on bookaway, if you use the Ultramar official site there is a ticket price difference.

While a round trip is approximately $35 USD for adults. Prices can vary depending on the company and whether you buy a one-way or round-trip ticket. But as of today December 5th, 2025 that price is $17 when booking shuttle on Bookaway.

All of the ferry companies have kiosk near the ferry pier. I highly recommend just getting a one-way ticket and then buy a ticket when you are ready to come back. So your not waiting for a ferry because you already bought a return ticket or trying to catch a specific ferry.

• Premium Class : $20 USD (364 peso)
• Round trip adult: $35 USD 
• One-way child (ages 5–11): $12 USD
• Round trip child (ages 5–11): $24 USD

 

Where To Get Ferry Tickets

You can buy high speed passenger ferry tickets from playa del Carmen to cozumel in three different ways. Each ferry operator has their own self service kiosk at the piers that allows you to buy your ferry ticket. Also you have two additional ways to buy your ticket for your playa del Carmen to cozumel day trip:

You should remember that the standard round-trip ticket for your day trip to Cozumel from playa del Carmen often assigns an exact return time when purchasing. You might run across a Cozumel excursion near the end of your day, and the freedom to take a later ferry might be worth the difference in the cost. I always buy two one-way tickets.

Additionally, you can also reserve seats in the more popular areas of the ship that have air conditioning and shade. I HIGHLY recommend this, baking the sun coming across kinda sucks . If you’re lucky enough to be a resident, bring your residency card to show at the toll booth for a discounted ticket.

Should You Bring Your Car

I often hear travelers ask about bringing their rental car over. Maybe you got a good deal on a rental from Cancun and are staying on Cozumel. While it is certainly possible to save time by having your own car on the island, I generally advise against it for a single playa del Carmen to cozumel mexico day trip.

The car ferry takes about the same time as the passenger ferry (45 minutes) but departs from the Calica Mexico Cruise Port, which is about three miles south of the city, requiring extra travel time on the mainland.

This option is mostly for long-term visitors, those hauling large gear, or if you have a huge group. However here is a great guide I found for those of you taking a car from playa to Cozumel.

• Operators: Transcaribe and UltraCarga operate the boats.
• The Caveat: Pricing for both cars and passengers is significantly higher than the passenger ferry, and they have very limited daily departures. You must book this in advance. 

 

Are The Beaches Better in Cozumel or Playa Del Carmen

There is no doubt that the beaches on cozumel’s island are much better than Playa Del Carmen. Cozumels beaches are tropical and relaxing vs plays beaches that are developed by buildings and full of seaweed parts of the year that really stinks.

It’s always windy and not relaxing. If you want the ultimate beach experience try a  free beach in Cozumel to satisfy your desire.

Where To Eat On Your Day Trip

I’m going to be completely honest. I have eaten at over 3 dozen (yes 36!) places in Cozumel mexico. Not all of them were good that’s for sure. I’ve tried Armanian, Italian, Belizian and of course Mexican and feel like I would be cheating you if I didn’t give you my favorite places to eat in Cozumel and simply repeat food spots you see on EVERY other blog.

Beach club food is cheap, and who comes to Mexico to eat at the Buffalo Wild Wings right at the cruise port? Senor Frogs is popular, but prices are high. I don’t know about you, but I hate getting over charged for basic food like what you find at over 50% of the beach clubs.

Larger places like what I just named above have a ridiculous peso conversion rate that is higher than other places on the island. If you ask me it’s a rip off! So I created a Cozumel Food Guide that helps

After years of planning these trips, I’ve learned that the secret to a great day is packing light and smart. Especially if your concerned about cozumel weather in December which is the most popular time to visit. How To Get Around On a Day Trip

Don’t worry, once you step off the ferry, getting around the island is the easiest part of the trip! You will see taxes lined up to your left. Get in line they are first come first serve.

• Taxis: The simplest option. Find them right outside the terminal for a direct ride to any beach or excursion.
• Scooters: My personal favorite for fun! Rent one near the ferry terminal to cruise the coastal road at your own pace.
• Dune Buggy Rentals:Conveniently located but generally not necessary unless you plan to drive the entire island loop.
• Walking: The main town of San Miguel is very walkable—perfect for a quick look around the pier area.

When we took our day trip it started raining. With the beach being cancelled we decided to checkout San Gervasio Park, the oldest excavated Mayan ruin on the island. It was really cool to see how they used to live and learn about the culture of all the Mayans and how they disappeared .

Visit A Cenote

 I have been to every cenote in cozumel, also ones in the Dominican Republic. You will regret not seeing it with your own eyes. A cenote is an underground chamber that becomes accessible when the ceiling collapses. As a result, the cenote contains collected rainwater and spring water, stalactites and stalagmites, and lush plant life growing above.

Public Beaches In Cozumel, Mexico

Last Tuesday I rode my scooter out to Playa Casitas with my coffee and watched two cruise passengers argue with a taxi driver about being charged $25 at a beach labeled ‘free’ on a Google listing. That’s why this article exists. Let’s dig into the most accurate and up to date I go on cozumles beaches.

Not everyone wants big crowds, expensive drinks, bland food or all the amenities (pool, chairs and toys). Some of us just want to put out a towel and read or relax peacefully. Well, i’ve got you covered with the list of Cozumels FREE Public beaches.

Imagine someone says “hey this beach in Cozumel is free”  but when you get there they ask for $20 entrance fee. Well not with my blog, let’s dive in.

 

Top Cozumel Beaches

Western Beaches

• Playa Palancar: One of the largest stretches of white sand on the island, this free beach in Cozumel boasts multiple beach clubs and vendors for beach equipment rentals.
• Playa Corona: Another free beach in Cozumel, Playa Corona is also one of the oldest beaches and a great place to snorkel.
• Sunset Beach: Also known as one of the best beaches for snorkeling!
• Paradise Beach: Spend a lazy day in the sun on this popular beach or purchase a “Fun Pass” for access to water toys, kayaks, and paddleboards.

Eastern Beach

• Punta Morena: Dine at this delicious seafood restaurant with live music after a swim in the ocean! Beach chairs and restrooms with showers are available.
• Playa Chen Rio: This stunning and secluded beach has shallow tide pools protected by a reef for some light swimming and large rocks breaking up the surf.
• Playa Bonita: Tucked in a cove with powdery sand and gentle waves, this beach also has a restaurant and bar, Punta Chiqueros.
• Punta Sur Park: Go snorkeling, lounge seaside, tour ruins, or visit an organic tequila farm within this ecological park!

Below I will categorize and outline each of these beaches according to what they provide.

 

 

Are Beaches in Cozumel Public?

Yes, every beach in Cozumel is technically public by Mexican federal law but that doesn’t mean you can just walk onto it. There are a few remaining beaches that have free public access. No person or entity can own the sand or water extending from the ocean up to the highest tide line (approx 20ft) it’s federal public property.

This means you have the legal right to walk, swim, and sunbathe on this strip of sand anywhere on the island. This universal public right is a crucial fact for visitors to know, but it’s only part of the truth.

 

 

Are Cozumel Beaches Free? The Honest Answer

Cozumel’s beaches are 100% public by Mexican federal law up to the high-tide line, but only a handful offer genuinely free access. Most popular beaches are fronted by beach clubs charging $20–$30 entry or minimum spends around $16 USD. Three beaches are truly free with no gatekeeper.

Free beaches with Public access, such as Chen Rio or Playa Casitas can be a great experience, you just have to know where to look. Don’t worry I’ll give you all the details here. But, remember public and free are different. Before I tell you about the beaches let me clear up the confusion.

The confusion is access to the beach. Resorts, beach clubs, and restaurants own the surrounding land between the road and water which is where we would normally park and walk up to access the beach.

 

Is There Sargassum on Cozumel’s Beaches in

Cozumel’s west-side beaches are largely sargassum-free year-round because of the deep channel and west-facing geography. The east side can see seaweed arrivals from April through August but recovers quickly. Compared to Tulum or Playa del Carmen on the mainland, Cozumel sees far less sargassum impact.

So these Cozumel beach clubs often charge a “entry fee” or enforce a minimum consumption to grant you access to their property. This is what Playa Palancar now does. These are the prime beach areas (on the east side of the island) and that’s why they charge.

There are handful of beaches that are genuinely 100% free, meaning you can walk right onto the sand without passing through a business or paying anything are the true hidden gems.

 

The Truly Free Public Beaches in Cozumel (2026)

These beaches have free public access to anyone and offer safe swimming when the water is calm. They’re ideal for travelers visiting Cozumel on a budget or looking for free things to do in cozumel without breaking the bank just to swim.

• Playa Casitas (West side, 3 miles from port, rocky, quiet, church landmark)
• Playa San Martin (East side, 34km, 7 miles of open beach, windy, bar nearby)
• Playa Chen Río (East side, 28km, natural rock-protected pool)
• Playa Las Rocas (West side, close to town, free, snorkeling) New!
• Playa Stingray (10-minute walk north of cruise terminals, rocky, free, closest to port)  New!

 

Remember, most of these beaches don’t have amenities like restrooms, chairs, or shade, and I list them for you below.

 

Playa Casitas Beach

Cost: free

Distance From Port: 3 miles

This is a small free public beach open for anyone. It’s at the north-west end of the island just right outside town next to the airport. This is the great choice for cruise passengers looking for beaches near Cozumel cruise port. It’s also one of the few on the west side of Cozumel which means calmer waters!

I recommend you bring food, a towel and snorkel gear. This beach it’s great for getting some peace and quiet. Because of it’s distance from the cruise port (12 minutes) it’s less busy than others but one public and free of the Cozumel beach options.

Locals call it ‘Casitas’ but the sign says nothing navigate by the church across the street. GPS will route you past the entrance.

Tourists have said they drive past it and missed the entrance. So look for this church, you won’t be able to miss it. The beach is on your left coming from downtown.

It doesn’t have sand like you would prefer. It’s rocky which is common here but there are places to get some shade and food isn’t far of you decide your hungry.

Playa San Martin

Cost: Free

Distance from port: 34km

This is a great place for a peaceful break away, but keep in mind it is further than Casitas. San Martin is located on the east side of the island (opposite to cruise port) so you will need to take a taxi or rent a vehicle.

Known as the 7-miles of virgin beach it’s A large open public beach. Waves can be stronger here, so check conditions — but on calmer days, it’s a wide, gorgeous place to swim with lots of space. There is also a bar & Grill  within walking distance of you get hungry and also bathrooms shown in the photo below.

Remember this beach requires you to get there and back, so it’s not recommend for cruise pass.egera bit id your port call is longer then 3 hours you can absolutely do it. It’s also a great addition to a private tour that you can get by hiring pretty much any a taxi driver. Playa Chen Río

Cost: Free

Distance from port: 28km

About 4 miles down the road from San Martin is Playa Chen Rio Beach. This is the most popular beach in Cozumel for multiple reasons. It’s Free, has a area protected from rough waves and has good nearby. Lots of locals and tourist come here for a break away.

I don’t recommend this beach for cruise passengers because it would take up to much of your time for travel. This beach is great for people taking a day trip from playa del Carmen to Cozumel. The location and transportation needed makes it ideal for people with their own vehicle or multi- day vacations in cozumel.

 

It’s busy and popular. Located on the west side and known for its rock-protected natural pools that break the waves and create safe swimming pockets. One of the best options for a public beach on the east side with added protection.

Playa Palancar

Cost: Free *No longer Free*

This beach is located on the southern most west side of the island furthest away from the cruise port. They are a beach club yes, but they are one of the few no entrance fee beach clubs in Cozumel. Also among the most popular public beaches with some of the calmest water on the west side.

Recent research shows that Palancar beach club changed their policy and now require visitors to spend at least 200 pesos ($16 usd) and the access is free.

You can just hop a taxi and head down. With a massive rock free swimming area palancar beach is great for swimming, snorkeling, relaxing, and escaping crowds while still having optional paid amenities nearby if you change your mind

Playa San Francisco

Cost: Free w/ $20 food purchase

Although its surrounded by beach clubs, the shoreline itself is public. The water here is typically very calm and shallow, making it perfect for swimming and families.

The closest walkable free beach to Cozumel’s cruise port is Playa Stingray, a 10-minute walk north of the International and Puerta Maya terminals. It’s rocky with clear water, has no amenities, and no entrance fee. Caletita Beach is closer (0.1 miles) but smaller and has limited services.

 

Best Beaches Near Cozumel Cruise Port(walkable)

There are only really two beaches within walking distance from Cozumel cruise ports. These don’t require you to take a taxi or rent a car. I list three other beaches slightly further that have free beach access too.

• Caletita Beach: The absolute closest beach, generally walkable (approx. 0.1 miles). Best for a quick dip or short visit, but note it is rocky and has limited services.
• Playa Stingray: A 10-minute walk north of the International and Puerta Maya terminals. It’s rocky with clear water, has no amenities, and no entrance fee.
• El Cid La Ceiba Hotel: Located right by the International Cruise Terminal (0.1 – 0.5 miles, walkable). Offers the quickest access to calm water and lounge chairs if you secure a day pass.
• Money Bar Beach Club: A very short taxi ride (1 – 1.5 miles, 5 minutes) from the main piers. An excellent, convenient option known for its great snorkeling right off the shore, with full-service food and drinks.

 

 

Best Public Beach for Snorkeling from Shore

The best shore-entry snorkeling in Cozumel is at Money Bar (Dzul-Ha Reef), where the reef sits roughly 20 feet from the shore in 10-foot water with heavy marine life. Playa Corona is a close second. Neither charges entry, though it’s customary to buy a drink or two. You can expect to see tons of fish if you swim out to deeper water.

Don’t get it mixed up with the beach club entrance. Specifically the small sandy area to the right of the beach club access.

Best Public Beach In Cozumel

The best Public beach for swimming in Cozumel is Chen Rio (about a half km south of Coconut’s.) The public access is right before El Pescador.

This public swimming area has a small tidal pool and a nice beach that makes it safe for families. This is the spot for a completely free and natural experience on the island’s.

 

Travel details to Chen Rio from cruise port

• Distance: Approximately 10 to 12 miles (16 to 19 km) from the main cruise ports (Puerta Maya or International Pier).
• Travel Time: The drive typically takes about 25 minutes one-way, as it requires crossing the island
• Cost: For a taxi ride from the cruise port to Chen Rio you can expect to pay $30-$35

Keep in mind majority of cozumel’s shoreline is Rock so public swimming places are few and far between. Be aware that the East Side is known for large waves and strong currents, which is largely my reason for writing this blog as a part of my is Cozumel safe for tourists series. Where To Eat Near Chen Rio

If you choose Chen Rio to swim from our list of free access beaches in Cozumel, I HIGHLY suggest you don’t pass up the chance to experience Coconuts Bar & Grill. It’s Just down the road like 1 mile.

They have lots of animals like a small zoo, and you get the chance to eat on a cliff overlooking the ocean! This is an adult bar families are ok eating there but be cautious most customers are adults and that’s what the staff are used to dealing with.

With over 2k Google reviews and a 4.5 star rating Coconuts Bar & Grill is a must see place. It’s super cool even just walking up to the bar. It’s like your favorite small bar back home with tons of history and memories only this one has love animals.

 

What is The Nicest Beach In Cozumel

The “nicest” beach in Cozumel is Playa Palancar.  Remember, palancar is no longer free, but it is still a top choice for a large beach with a relaxing atmosphere. It’s busy but less crowded than other beaches. While Paradise Beach is ideal for those seeking amenities like water sports, pools, and food service. For snorkeling, both Playa Corona and the accessible reef at Playa Palancar are excellent options.

• Playa Corona – Is named among top snorkeling beaches from shore. It has a small reef relatively close to the shore, good clarity, and accessible without extensive boat travel or fees.
• Playa Palancar – Is commonly suggested as one of the best beaches in Cozumel and also for it’s snorkeling area — though much of the reef is accessed by boat; the shore-entry snorkeling may be limited depending on conditions.

West Side vs. East Side: Which Has Better Beaches?

Cozumel’s west side has calmer water, more beach clubs, easier cruise-port access, and better snorkeling. The east side (the “wild side”) has bigger waves, dramatic open scenery, fewer crowds, and is rougher for swimming — except at Chen Río’s protected pool. Choose west for convenience and water activities, east for scenery and solitude.

Cozumel Street Massages

You will see therapists setting up chairs or tables right on the sidewalk near the cruise terminals offering very cheap rates. I did this once while we were out walking only because I have a pinched never in my neck. It’s comparable to the people in the middle of the mall you always walk past. Great if you need them for at little as 10 minutes. Just know they will try to upsell you to a traditional massage in their building.

Pros: Very cheap (often negotiable).

Cons: Zero privacy, street noise/fumes, and hygiene can be hit-or-miss.

Recommendation: Spend the extra $10-$20 to go to one of the dedicated locations listed above. The difference in hygiene and relaxation is worth it, trust me.

December is considered a great time to visit Cozumel because of the high temps and dry weather. The month of December is the start of dry season immediately following the cozumel hurricane season. In Cozumel, December is winter, but there’s no cold, chilly weather. That’s what makes this month the start of peak travel season.

The island holds a steady tropical climate, making it a fantastic choice for a winter escape. During the day, temperatures soar to around 83°F, creating the perfect setting for bumming at one of the cozumel beach clubs and exploring the city streets of Cozumel.

Cozumel is not rainy in the month of December. Rainfall is scarce that for sure, but storms do pass through every now and then. Good news is the move through quickly (30 min – 1hr). Then the skies open back up to sunshine. It rains maybe 6 days a month in Cozumel mexico during December.

Temps drop to a comfortable 72°F which means you still can enjoy pleasant night exploring the best local street food without heavy sweaters. Is it warm enough to swim in December

These water in Cozumel is beautifully warm and the water visibility is excellent for scuba diving or snorkeling. Water Caribbean isn’t like other places, the water temps in cozumel and adding the equator average 77°F to 80°F (25-27°C).

Yes, the water is almost the same temperature as the air! Sometimes with the north winds it can feel a little cooler when your wet and you feel the wind, but it’s very comfortable for water activities.

You can walk into the water without a hint of cold shock because it’s very warm and inviting. The average water temps are 71 degrees in December.

We went out on a snorkeling tour with a group of 12 other people. We spent the entire time in the water stopping at two reefs before anchoring at place where we got to see sting rays!

As your can see above the water is incredibly clear and comfy. The captain and instructor prepared fresh pico while we swam with insanely bright colored wish. My girlfriend even got scared they came so close!

The water temperature is just right, which means it’s absolutely perfect for swimming at a Cozumel beach club or booking a all inclusive snorkeling tour to El Cielo. What to wear in December

 

The trick to packing for a trip to cozumel in December is to thin layers. I’m from the north so it always feels like spring to me, but if your from down south it with feel chilly. I focus on packing light layers for warm days and breezy nights. This is the exact list I packed myself

Daytime Essentials

• Swimwear (multiple)
• Light cotton t-shirts
• flip-flops 
• Thin long sleeve

Sun Protection: Sunglasses are a must so interest in a good pair, and SPF 50 sunscreen.

Nighttime Essentials

• Comfy: light sweater or cardigan
• Formal Layer: Thicker button-down shirt

Remember, he nights can get breezy but it’s not for sure. It’s always better to have layers and not need them and be chilly. If your reading in town it will be much warmer than a romantic dinner by the water.

This is considered the official start of peak season, meaning more crowds and higher prices, especially around the holidays. The high prices don’t stop people from booking their trips in anything more people come!

Cozumel can get up to 7 cruise ships in one day, which means close to 40,000 people from ships alone. The island is festive, decorated for Christmas, with cultural events. She wouldn’t let me leave until we got the perfect pic on this swing

I didn’t pay to climb the Celarain Lighthouse, but you can definitely see the entire coast! But the real magic is spotting the wildlife. You can stop off before you get there as walkout onto a spotting deck to see huge crocodiles in the Columbia Lagoon.

Punta Sur was a really cool experience. There isn’t a whole lot to the tower it’s mainly a beach and Eco Park so don’t have super high expectations.

 

Jade Cavern ATV Jungle Tour

With the sun rising around 7:07 AM and setting at 6:06 PM, Cozumel gifts you approx 11 hours of sunshine each day. Whether you’re an early riser or prefer sunset strolls, there’s lots of time to explore. For travelers who want to see the island in a unique way and this time of year is perfect for a four wheeler excursion tour that stops at the Jade Cavern Cenote.

Our tour started at the beach club and headed down the city streets and Into the back woods. I was surprised Cozumel had a jungle, I thought it was all beaches! Abut 30 minutes through the ride we arrived at the cenote and got to see the bats. The stairs walking down gave a really cool experience.

We stayed here for some cool pictures and headed back to the beach club where we spent the rest of our day at the beach and drinking margaritas! The chairs and amenities are all included when you book so that was cool.
